I mean a guy as smart defensively as Venables hires Roof - has Roof ever put a solid defense on the field? He must be a better interviewer than Collins.

I had the same thought about how well he must interview. It's like he interviews well and people see that he's coached at so many notable programs and assume that means he must be good.
That one year at Penn State was the only time I ever remember thinking he did an above average job. 2014 was okay, but it was more about forcing just enough timely turnovers to help out an offense that virtually never punted.

My memory is he’s actually really good against pro set defenses. Look at our stats against UGA under him. It’s just the spread teams that he simply cannot defend and they are everywhere.

That would probably explain why he fared pretty well at Penn State, going up against vanilla Big Ten offenses each week.
