How can we profit from what was the worst Tech performance since 51-7?
1. Yes, bowls are a reward. Have some fun. Do the team things that the guys will enjoy. But, work hard in preparation. Hit a little bit. Don't break too long for Christmas. Bowls can set the stage for next season. The nation is watching. They matter.
2. Don't ever get self-satisfied. Yes, beating the Dawgs was immensely satisfying. But, you have to stay hungry to beat LSU. They were sure ready to prove they were far superior to all of our hype. We should have focused on the opportunity to beat the defending national champions. If we want to get to the level of Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Ohio State, we have to work hard all the time. In fact, with some of our disadvantages compared to those schools we will have to work harder than they do to have success routinely.
This was a good first season for Coach Johnson. A win tonight would have made it very good. 9-4 is a step up from our usual five losses, but it was not so radically different from seasons past, except for beating UGA.
If we had won tonight, CPJ and the team just might have gone into the offseason feeling like they had arrived. Tonight should remind us there is much work to do to keep getting better. Take a week off, then come back ready to be the hardest working program in the ACC beginning with winter conditioning.
Pieces are in place for a very good year 2009. But, the DL must develop and linebackers improve. The OL must get stronger, quicker, and more effective. Josh's ball handling and passing needs to get better. And, the kicking game needs attention in every aspect.
