Let's say CCG's gone...

This is as easy as it gets: PAUL JOHNSON

It will not be Paul Johnson...he is never considered for BCS conference positions because he runs a high-schoolish run-oriented option offense and he is looked at as lacking creative abilities on pass offense....he has barely average 100 yds. per game passing as a college coach. In a BCS conference it requires creative pass offense to win. He also is seen as a weak recruiter for some reason...I do not know why.

I know some knowledgeable football people at the GTAA say "no way" in regards to Paul Johnson.

heck...the fact that Taz Anderson wants him is enough for me to say no. He tried to get Ross fired after his second season and then led the charge to hire Bill Lewis who he called "the next Bobby Dodd".

What about Charlie Strong, the Florida DC and Assistant HC. He did a helluva job with that unit.
My thoughts exactly. Strong would be an excellent choice IMO.

Wake begs to differ.

They have a creative pass offense...they are just a run first team....that spreads things out and uses misdirection to run the ball.

What makes you think Paul Johnson wouldn't be able to incorporate passing into his offense? Who even says he would run the same offense he runs at Navy? He has run other offenses in the past, and he wouldn't run the same offense that he runs at Navy here.

FWIW, my first choice would be Jimbo Fisher, and Paul Johnson my second choice. I think either one of them would do an outstanding job at Tech.

What makes you think he can, other than blind faith?

It seems to me that a certain amount of Johnson's success can be traced to his softening of Navy's schedule. Another chunk is due to the limited preparation teams have to go against his junk offense. With that said, I am sure he is a fine coach, but the number of unanswered questions outweigh the positives for a BCS school to take a chance on him.

He hasn't proven he can recruit on the Div 1-a level. He hasn't proven he can pass on the Div 1-a level. He hasn't proven he can relate to big time Div 1-a athletes.

I might give him a twirl, if he blew me away in the interview, but I can't see a major college AD giving him that interview.

I don't think Johnson is running something entirely different now. If you check his bio on the Navy site they do talk about him running a spread offense but everything they point out is about his running attack. For his career it looks like he's trying to hit about a 300 ypg rushing vs 100 ypg passing. At the bowl game he said that he's been running the same offense for 20 years. I'm not saying he can't change, but I am asking why you would want him to. He's successful doing what he knows. Why would you want someone different? If you do, you probably don't want him.

I am just telling you what many in the coaching community will say....there is a reason he has not been talked to about the myriad of openings in the SEC and ACC over the years.

I certainly do not know enought to say anyone is a 'can't miss' coach...of course 99% of the hires are eventually misses.

From what I have seen of the offense Paul Johnson runs, he would get laughed out of town within 2 seasons.

I'm sure he is a high character guy that likes Tech, but he couldn't coach anywhere in the ACC. Maybe the Big East.
