We have probably the least effective DL in the conference. They rarely shed blocks, rarely create gaps for the LB, and just about never demand a double team.

I don't see many guys improving with time. Roof may not be the problem.

Oh, and fire Sewak.

I've wondered the same thing. Ultimately it's the guy at the top who is responsible. Either he can identify a specific problem below him on the chain and solve it, or he takes the blame. Our defensive performance this season has been flat out pathetic. I don't think any excuses about talent are valid, either. We are just really, really bad on a consistent basis.

We are thin thanks to other coaches. We are also pathetically non-aggressive. That I blame on Roof. With the CPJ offense, either it works or it doesn't, but get off the field one way or another. We had no chance to win scoring 20 points, we hired him for his offensive acumen. It is obvious that neither side of the ball is getting anything consistently done and the coaching is wtf. Maybe we should send our punt return team out when the opponent is snapping the ball on second down.

I can't fathom the amount of willful ignorance required to keep believing things like this when our offense has been consistently one of the best in the country under CPJ's tenure. The problem is that our defense has been just as consistently bad. The fact that putting up over 500 yards against a ranked team in a game where our star QB got injured is considered a bad day for us tells us all we need to know, IMO.

Those 500 yds yielded 20 points. That wasn't good enough. The offense was by. I means great. Red zone was horrific.

You mean the 17 points against BC or the 20 against UNC were sufficient? Maybe the 7 against Clemson floats your boat. AS JUSTIN THOMAS' FATHER SAID, WE ARE INCONSISTENT ON OFFENSE. By the way, he was Justin's high school coach. The offense has not been that good for the last couple of years. They put up yardage, but not points, and when that is your identity, you lose. The defense is horrible, but that is a signature of Johnson teams. Ever wonder why?

Redzone was bad because our OL got very little push. Getting called for holding on a straight run play was awful.

But the DL does nothing but stay on blocks. That makes sense in a Tenuta D where the LB are blitzing from different angles and the DL is trying to create gaps. But our DL just lock up and don't move their guy. Usually it is our guys getting turned and taken out of the play.

Also, our blitzes are predictable, which makes blocking the LBs pretty easy.

We fumble twice every game. If we had a defense we could overcome those mistakes but we can't. The offensive line is still consistently bad which is the result of the fumbles. That falls on Sewak. There's plenty of blame for both sides of the ball.

There are problems with the O and D just as there are problems if you broke an arm and your neck falling down a flight of stairs.

Seems kinda dumb to worry (complain) about the broken arm.

BC was a bad game. No argument there. The points against UNC were obviously insufficient, but it wasn't a terrible offensive performance overall. Clemson is just a much better team that was well-prepared and kicked our ass.

If the offense is as mediocre as you say, then why is it consistently ranked in the top 20 most efficient offenses in the country? It's been in the top 3 twice, and it's currently ranked in the top 10 THIS SEASON despite not being perfect, as you apparently demand.

The defense is horrible, but that is a signature of Johnson teams. Ever wonder why?
No argument here. Our defense has never been good under PJ, and sometimes it's been REALLY bad. It's a tremendous shame, because our 2009 and 2014 offenses were national title caliber.

Is it, though? I've thought we looked better for most of this season, especially in pass protection.

If they don't put points on the board, yards are useless. It really is that simple.

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

It is perfectly acceptable to say both units sucked yesterday.

Look it boils down to this. Offense's job is to score more points and the defense's job is to hold them to lesser points. Neither side did what they were supposed to. The defense, other than forcing an fg and a punt they let them score at will. They were atrocious. The offense couldn't take advantage of the few opportunities they got to catch up. It doesn't matter how many yards they get, if they're coughing up the ball twice every game and can't score in the red zone, all the stats in the world won't make them a good offense. Top efficiency offense doesn't mean shit because obviously UNC was more efficient than they are. So no they don't get a passing grade but obviously the defense is the biggest issue right now.

"3 pts in the entire 2nd half should be more than enough to win games"

Our offense had almost as many fumbles (2) as pts (3) in an entire ööööing half of football.

Our Points Per Possession is all that matters and that sucked yesterday. 0.75 PPP in the 2nd half. öööö total yards - that means nothing.

Only on a GT board could the offense get blamed for the defense giving up 700 yards.
Who blamed the offense? The fact of the matter is both sides sucked when it counted. UNC is a good offensive team and 20 points isn't going to do it. Conversely, giving 10 yard cushions and blitzing into the center of the pocket isn't getting it done either. Trying to sneak the field goal unit in after calling a timeout due to an idiotic play isn't doing it either. Who should we hold responsible?
