List: NFL Starting QB's NOT better than Tebow

No I just listed a guy with similar measurables that happened to come from the exact same system and had the same kind of success.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice and you can't be an NFL General Manager.

Now consider Vince Young. He's a significantly BETTER athlete than Tebow, with that size and strength, and was as much of a winner in college. He lost his job to a washed up late 30 something QB from the scrap heap who just led the team to best record in the NFL.

Tebow will make a very nice H-Back in the NFL. He'll probably be more successful if he goes to medical school and starts clinics for poor people in 3rd world countries.

It is easy to make a list of starting QBs that suck in the NFL. That has nothing to do with another guy becoming a top NFL QB.

Young can't throw. I think the jury's still out on Tebow.

Actually, NFL/draft people liked Smith's mechanics -- so he does not have the same measurables. His arm strength was a bit low, but his release and motion were good.

Let me fix that: Young can't throw against NFL defenses.

Here are their junior season statistics, which reveal very little difference in these two shotgun spread offense QBs:

QB #1: 192/298 64.4%, 30 TD, 4 INT, 2747 yds, 172 rating, 673 yds rush on 176 att

QB #2: 212/325 65.2%, 26 TD, 10 INT, 3036 yds, 164 rating, 1050 yds rush on 155 att

The jury is still out, but everyone pretty much knows what the verdict will be.

When it comes to the NFL, "everyone" has "pretty much known" lots of things, lots of times, that have turned out to be incorrect.

So, the accuracy track record for predicting success, even among seasoned NFL scouts, has been fairly spotty.

It isn't just QB either. There is quite a list of successful NFL players that "experts" didn't give much of a chance. The common factor for all of them was they were winners who fell short in some way physically (size, speed, strength.) (Most examples that come to mind are LBs for some reason.)

On the other side, there is an equally impressive list of physical freaks who were rated highly and failed miserably in the NFL.

lonestar, I agree with you completely, and have said that in numerous posts. However, what is also true is that NFL teams do not gamble with 1st day picks, especially first rounders. And Tebow is a gamble at QB. That is why I have repeatedly said he is NOT a first day selection, and why going back to college was right for him.

Tebow would make a nice HB but is he a better HB than guys that have been practicing similar positions for the last four years? .

Whisenhunt was a QB.

Randall El was a QB.

Hines Ward was a QB.

Matt Jones was a QB.

McFadden was a QB even.


I am one of the apparent minority who anticipate NFL success at QB for Tebow. It does depend on getting the right situation, however.

But, if he doesn't make it, I don't see his lack of practice at any other position hurting his prospects.

At all levels teams tend to put their best players at QB in the absence of a prototype QB. Those players could be successful at many positions depending on what the team needs.

Agreed.

Even if I was in charge of drafting for a team and believed he would be a success, I would not waste a pick earlier than I needed if I felt confident he would be around later (because most others disagreed with my assessment.)

I just think someone will get a bargain.
