Holy Smokes is right.

The following starters are seniors:

Defense: Scott, K Hall, and Anoai
Offense: Ball, Wrotto, Matthews

The following 2nd stringers are seniors:
Defense: -
Offense: Cooper, Dunlap

The following other players are seniors:
McGuire, Williams

The following players MIGHT declare early for the pros: C Johnson, Wheeler

The following players will be added:
Might not R/S: Nesbitt, Threet, Dwyer, R Jones, Claytor, White, Melton, Jefferson, Jackson, Donley, Butler, Tarrant
Probably R/S: Gilbert, Yandell, Walls
Plus 3-4 more

The following are plays I THINK are being redshirted this year (or are not yet eligible):
Barnes, Peek, Braman, Gaston, Ingram, Barrick, Earls, Tongo, Anderson, Bray, Jasper, Kelly, Reese

Next year's seniors will include:
Defense: Oliver, Robertson, Wheeler, Guyton, Roberson, P Clark, Lewis, Jones
Offense: Choice, Grant, C Johnson, Rhodes, Newberry, Tuminello, McManus, Riles, Cox

We will be more experienced, older, and presumably more stout.

The ONLY question I see on next year's squad is a big one. We will be replacing a senior quarterback. In the mix will be a r/s junior, a r/s freshman, a true freshman, and even a r/s soph plus whatever Booker will be, if anything. As our quarterbacking goes, so will go our team.

And the sky is the limit.

Yeah, but I think we'll all agree that while most of us like Reggie, and support him, and hope he does well, very few of us are going to lose any sleep over not having him back.

In fact, I hate to say it but it's entirely possible that not having Reggie would be a plus for Calvin. You could see it in CJ's eyes on the sideline last Saturday.

I wish Reggie the best and pray he's healthy for Miami, but if he's not, I pray we play a healthy QB.

Gaston had a torn ACL and I believe he will play next year. I highly doubt Phillip Wheeler will go pro.

The two positions I'm worried about next year are QB and WR if Calvin leaves. QB is a complete wild card to me at this point. Reggie has thankfully only gone down for one game and we just haven't seen enough of Taylor to really know how he'll do.

Maybe I'm worrrying too much about WR next year, but I haven't seen much production there this year past Calvin. I'm guessing the front two will be James Johnson and Greg Smith or maybe Demaryius Thomas stepping up.

However, past those two positions, we look good or excellent, especially on the lines.

I'm not worried about WR. Players (who are players) step out of the shadow when the superstar leaves.

And don't forget the true freshmen.

Threet will not redshirt...highly unlikely. He is enrolling in January and plans on competing in the spring for the starting job. Ingram and Bennett will likely provide the biggest competition at that time. Nesbitt will throw his hat in the ring come August.

. It will be hard to get snaps for Garner, Manley...and Booker still has not joined the team but is in school.

Memo To Techbert ....

thanks for the crystal ball, but we are still very much in the running for the Coastal Division championship in 2006. That might be worth half a flag or something, plus a trip to Jacksonville in December. It would sure beat the hell out of the Pacific Northwest for Christmas.

The Thing About Reggie

The thing about Reggie is that he does not give us the ideal quarterbacking that is easy to see, but he does things for us that we don't notice.

His stats are pretty good this year, and he doesn't often put us in a position where we beat ourselves. He's a senior quarterback, and I think he deserves the respect normally given a senior quarterback.

Coupla years ago his hand was swollen up like he had elephantiasis pretty much the whole year. Reggie, who was STILL better than any alternative we had, had awful short pass accuracy, but we still finished better than .500. Tough kid, both physically and emotionally.

I have a border collie that you can drop a 1600 pound weight on, and she won't give you any clue that she is in pain. Reggie's like that. For better and for worse.

And Your Point?

We'll be better next year than this year. This year is pretty good, and could still be outstanding. What's your point?

It sure would!! Actually, I have a strong craving for oranges!!

Just ribbing you big guy, but I want you to stay "in the moment" :D . I know you are not doing this, but I don't think we should be bailing on 2006 when we still have a chance at a great season. The timing of your post seems strange given that we just suffered a big defeat last weekend.

You are a sick, sick, man. I hope that is a joke.:ugh:

No way Wheeler goes pro. He is too small to play LB in the NFL. He maybe could play SS.

The OL should be very strong, which is good for breaking in a new QB.

What? Doesn't EVERYONE drop 1600 pound weights on their dogs?

Cycle, the timing of the post is because I responded to a post about the Clemson game, where I pointed out our defense has only 3 seniors on our two-deep. I thought about it for a while, and decided there was enough substance for a thread of its own.

People like to take snapshots, and say things are ALWAYS that way, where in truth things are constantly changing. I will sorely miss Anoai, Hall, and Scott, who are all outstanding, but we will be a stronger overall defense next year, and we won't lose a game next year if a team tries the same tactics Clemson used this year.

Likewise, people like to face adversity and decide it is the end of the world. I maintain we are still ramping upwards.

I think there are two questions regarding next year's team.
1.) Who steps up to replace Calvin as a receiving threat? Will it be one or more players?

The other offensive losses do not concern me.

2.) Who replaces Joe Anaoi on defense as far as leadership and ability go?

I don't think we have a DT that is on the bench who can replace Joe. He's been a monster for us. And quite frankly, our talent at DT drops off tremendously when he leaves.

Wheeler is not going to the NFL draft people. 6-2 220 lb Linebackers are not coveted as early round picks in the NFL. Wheeler will be around for his senior year. Anyone who thinks Wheeler would make an awesome early entry draft candidate is delusional.

We should see two young LB's emerge as "the Real Deal Holyfield" candidates next year. Tongo and more importantly AT BARNES!! I cannot wait to see this kid play. He's apparently a tremendous talent.

couple of responses

WR will be by committee if CJ goes...but with plenty of talent. Top three likely to be JJ, Smith, and Thomas. Lets not forget the big play ability of Earls...and Donley will be coming in with good size. Frierson has looked strong as well. Donley is 6-3 or 6-4, 200 lbs. DThomas is 6-3, 215 lbs.

DL leadership will come from Oliver and Richard. Richard is a brains/brawn combo. The next DT will be Walker but he has to put on more weight. Remember that is very young...plus he never redshirted. He had just turned 18 weeks before his freshman year started if memory serves me correctly.

Do not fret...but word has it that if Barnes or Tongo get much bigger they will end up playing down at DE. We will see what happens. Tenuta loves Shane Bowen.

I'm not too worried about the WR position. In addition to James Johnson (called beloved by the student body as "King James") and Greg Smith, we also have a ton of freshmen WR's. Someone will step up to fill the gaps.

As long as someone's putting the ball in their hands, we should be alright.

But, enough talk of next year, let's focus on scUM! I want sweet revenge for that beating we took two years ago at home.

I also want revenge for the criminals they allow on the hallowed grounds of BDS@GF.

you right about dat. She'd be ded!!

As much as I like Phillip Wheeler and love his motor, there is no way he would get drafted next year. The boy needs to stay and mature some more.

So what. You are talking about potential. None of the guys who are currently on the roster have done squat. The big play ability of Earls? What is that? High School ability? Frierson has looked strong? When?? Are these practice reports? Practice reports by those that report them are a joke. Entertainment and that is all. If Frierson has looked strong he'd probably be seeing more playing time.

Donley and Thomas have some size, but so did Bilbo and Xavier McGuire. You are talking about a load of potential. But piss in one hand and potential in the other and see which one fills up first.

Fact is someone has to step up and be a threat and we don't know if that can happen. To match CJ's ability we need more than one of them to step up. None of these guys makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that they can step up and produce numbers (even two of them) like CJ or even be a Kelly Campbell/Kerry Watkins or a Campbell/White combo. So far if any of them were a threat, they'd be giving us options at WR right now. That isn't happening.

DL leadership will come from Oliver and Richard. Richard is a brains/brawn combo. The next DT will be Walker but he has to put on more weight. Remember that is very young...plus he never redshirted. He had just turned 18 weeks before his freshman year started if memory serves me correctly.

Again.. we have a huge hole on the interior line and we have little to no beef at DE with little to no quality depth to back them up.

I hope to God Tongo and Barnes stay at LB. If they get much bigger then we lose a big fast LB and gain a smallish DE. We have NEVER been able to become a real contender with small DE's. Losing Monroe in the recruiting class was a massive blow. We need to recruit the lights out of DE and DT right now. Fill up the remainder of this class with big uglies on the DL.
