Luke Cox's future at Tech?

I just don't get it. PJ has been running this system forever. I think he knows how many guys he needs ready at each position. Why would we need to worry about it?
 
Luke currently has a thigh bruise and has missed the last several practices. From what I have observed, it looks like the coaching staff is trying to make the commitment to play Luke at B Back and Anthomy Allen at A Back. I am sure there will be certain formations where they may move either of them to the A or B Back position but those formations will be the exception to the rule and not a routine thing.

Here is how I see the B Back position falling out depth wise;

1) Dwyer
2) Cox and Watson still battling it out. Watson currently with slight lead due to Cox missing reps this spring
3) Whoever comes in second in item 2
4) Lyons - this dude is good enough to be a feature back for a lot of schools and will get some carries somewhere along the line.

So in my opinion we are 4 deep and very talented at the B Back position.

Who at B hasn't redshirted yet? Lyons and Cox are both transfers, right?

It is a fair question and unfortunately the answer is probably going to be cold and callous. Luke Cox scoring against Miami and again against the Mutts, and being an essential blocker on dozens of other successful plays during a remarkable season makes him one of those heroic figures that we all want to hold on to and to see more of. The fact is he,like so many others, is a holdover from the Gailey regime. It doesn't make him a worse player for that ,but his competition starts out with a leg up on him because they were chosen by this regime, and they were recruited with a specific skill set in mind.
As we get better and better, and deeper and deeper, there will be fan favorites that fall in the depth chart. It is the price we will pay for getting so good that even a Luke Cox can't see the field.
 
Great speech, Yukon, except apparently we want to play 6 deep at A back, (which I wasn't aware when I started the thread) so he'll see the field plenty.

Oh please. That was the lamest thing I've ever read. You know who else was a holdover from the Gailey regime? EVERYONE WHO PLAYED LAST YEAR. Seriously, lolz.

Luke isn't being brandied a hero for scoring against Miami or UGA. He is a legitimate go-to guy at the b-back position, and to think that a RS-Freshman and a walk-on are just going to take his spot is kinda ridiculous. Cox and Watson are probably about equal, with Lyons behind them.

Not just me, numerous posters on several boards, sportswriters, pundits, crackpots, you name it, have all said over and over---in praise of Paul Johnson--"the players here now were not recruited for and in most cases are ill suited for this offense." Then with a twinkle in their eye, and with hearts pounding with excited anticipation they announce with glee: "just wait until he gets HIS PLAYERS into the program."
It's a problem that we have seldom had since I've been watching Georgia Tech football---but it is a problem that Oklahoma has, LSU has, Alabama has, Georgia has,USC has, Florida has, Texas has, Ohio State has, etc. etc. etc. --you can't play but 11 at a time. Some of the really good ones have to sit. If Cox plays a lot it will be because he earns it. I doubt we'll play five or six at any position--even A back. But I am certain the best players will be the ones playing.

The heck with Sewak! Here's what I think.... ;)

Seriously... we will play the best we have under this staff. PJ has won big everywhere he's been, and that doesn't happen by playing favorites. We will be better when he gets 85 of his players on this team, no doubt, but until then the Cox' of the world will play plenty. He's a good, tough back who can lay a lick, catch a pass and run the ball.
 
Don't underestimate the value of having good hands. Luke does. IMO, he'd definitely be offered if he was a HS Sr. now.

He said Cox will be the next great B-Back at Tech after Dwyer leaves, and that Cox was actually playing out of position at A-Back. I chuckled and said to the table that I was going to miss seeing Cox destroying defenders on the edge as lead blocker for the opposite A-Back coming around with the pitch.

So, you guys can stop the drama.

Sigh...seeing as both Cox and Dwyer are listed as sophomores (rs or not, not sure but doesn't matter), that means CPJ thinks Dwyer will head to the NFL early.

Sigh... let me rephrase then. Coach Johnson said Cox will be the "next great B-Back after Dwyer". Maybe he meant on the depth chart. You guys tend to parse sentences like lawyers and get your panties in a wad. Next time, one of you attend the meeting.

Coach Johnson is making all the decisions about the program, including what positions players will play and the depth chart.

After this Lunch Bunch, I fully buy-in to any decisions he makes regarding his program, with no questions asked.

Yeah, just wait until CPJ can get rid of those players like Dwyer and Jones and get HIS players in the system. :wow: The fact is that the cupboard was not exactly bare when CPJ got here and don't think he did not know that when he took this job. Yes, he would have liked to have more and different type offensive linemen. I know that we like to blame every calamity in the world on either Bush or Gailey, but the 2007 class was a blessing for CPJ
 
At the risk of being a broken record, expect to see a lot of Cox when we approach the goal line. You don't need a sick 40 yard dash to run the dive from the 20.

There will be times and places and opponents where the play they give us is the five yard dive and Cox is perfect for that. UNC and possibly UVA's back seven (8 for goofy hoos) probably need to get a healthy beat down from Bull over and over inside their red zone. It's one thing to sell out to limit the big plays from Dwyer, Nesbitt, and Jones but its another thing when that means the beating Cox can deliver.
 
Cox is a good back who is very versatile (A or B, runs well, blocks very well, has good hands) and he plays hard.

Guys like that earn their share of plays from coaches like PJ. A fresh back is better than a tired back. When you have a load like Cox of the bench, that's a good thing.

IMO, people overemphasize the importance of starting as an A back in this offense.

I think that will be proven true of B back as well and maybe some other positions on defense too. I'd say the ability to put in a fresh player in the 4th who is almost as good as the starter overrides most things the starter could do on his own at that point. Even more likely is we rotate more often throughout the game.
