In the latest blow to a program beset by a recent wave of bad news, Georgia starting tailback Kregg Lumpkin was lost for the season after an MRI revealed a torn ACL in his left knee.

Lumpkin, a sophomore from Stephenson High School, was hurt Monday running a pass route during the first day of practice.

It has not been determined when he will have surgery and it is unclear if he will be healthy enough to return in spring drills.

"I'm disappointed with what has happened to Kregg," said coach Mark Richt. "He had worked extremely hard getting ready for this season. Now he'll have to postpone it until next year. But the good news is that he can get a redshirt year and still have three years to play."

With Lumpkin out, junior Tony Milton, sophomore Michael Cooper -- last season's leading rusher -- and impressive freshman Danny Ware, who enrolled at Georgia last spring, will compete for the starting spot.
