According to PJ. With quincy kelly hurting Lucas Cox will have to play more at b back. While Embry is also hurt at a back so we need more depth.

And this deserves an exclamation point, why? Burning redshirts is not exactly a good thing.

Yeah, that would certainly not be something to be celebrating. I would much rather have him for 4 years starting next year than for 3 & 1/2 starting this weekend.

I say live for today. Tomorrow isn't promised. If Wright can help us get better now then bring him in and let's get it on.

Go Jackets!

Yea this is actually not good at all. First we only get him for 3.5 years. Second we are having to use him because people are hurt.

Ok, based on the "live for today" premise - the Wright reviews from fall practice weren't exactly glowing.

BTW, Grobe built up Wake's program by strictly adhering to redshirting players. There's a huge difference between a 17 and an 18 YO (maturity of mind and body).

I totally disagree with this. It sounds pretty mystical and neat to say live for today and disregard the future, but I don't think it is very practical, especially with the current probability that tomorrow will come. Wright is a little undersized and could really use another year in the weight room before he is thrown on the field. There are still options at A-Back including Greg Smith(not everyone's favorite right now), Andrew Smith(made the switch to back to WR, but hasn't seen the field so he could be used in a crunch), and others. Unless we are just totally desperate, the I think we should stay the course with Marcus Wright's redshirt. I don't see PJ as a coach who makes the desperation move, but rather the calculated move. Leaving the redshirt on will pay off more for Tech if they can stay committed to that.

So he wasn't good enough to bust into the two deep, but we should be psyched that he's playin now?

I find this development very confusing on a number of levels.

Key word is "may" play. He'll probably be dressed and ready to go but I'm sure he won't see the field if we don't need him.

Also, if he does play he can still be redshirted next year. You have 5 years to play 4.

It's one thing to burn a redshirt after missing the first game (ala VPI), but to burn a redshirt after 5 games?? I hope this doesn't pan out. I would think we can get by Gardner Webb without him. Heck, I could come in and play against the Big Webb and we'd win.

So you're assuming he hasn't improved since then? I hope we don't need him because it would be a shame to burn his RS now. But if he gets in it's because PJ has confidence that he can do the job.

Good point NC. Coach knows what he's doing and he'll ONLY play Marcus if he's capable and ready.

BTW, on a different yet related note...THIS is the year we were supposed to be really suffering due to scholarship limits, right? I'd say so far we've fared pretty well. We may have to go to the well with freshman yet again. Of course continue to pray that we don't have any more significant injuries!

Ted would have been better than Chan!

You guys are worried about winning games in 2009, 2010 and on. I want to win out this year and if we have a guy that can come in and contribute toward that objective then I think you do what helps the team win now. The team is more important than the individual.

If you have watched our A Backs, we are not exactly lighting things up at that position. Andrew Smith is out with a shoulder injury, Peebles is hurt, Greg Smith still thinks he is a receiver and Cox is going to have to play B Back to spell JD until QK is back. That leaves us with Roddy Jones and if he goes down we are playing Troy Garside and Jonathon Malone a couple of walk ons.

Coach Johnson would not burn his redshirt if he did not think he could come in and make a positive contribution. He will evaluate him in practice this week and then decide. It would be nice to have an A-Back that had the speed to get the corner and turn it up field. Gives our opponents one more headache to deal with.

Go Jackets!

Improved since fall? Maybe. More mature physically (causing trouble holding onto the ball when hit by more physical players)? Probably not.

Hopefully we don't need him.

As far as living for today goes ... you live for tomorrow when your season is shot. Our season is pretty fracking bright right now. I hope to dear god we don't burn any redshirts playing Garner Webb, but if we have to burn some to beat Clemson then BURN THEM TO THE GROUND.

Jerry, I'm in that boat with you....

Frankly, you are DUMB if you don't play the guys that can help you win today. By redshirting a freshman you are saying that you will expect to get more use out of him in 2012 than we can get now. 2012!!! That's a long way off. We have no idea how we will look in 2012. He might not even make the two deep then for all we know. He might get hurt, he might leave school. If we can't recruit someone to take his place in four years, we have MORE problems than one redshirt.

I'd agree with redshirting everyone who can't hekp you win. I understand the strategic view. I understand investing in the future. But I do not understand starving to death today so my kids can spend my inheritance. In this particular case, I expect we could get past GW without him, so I don't understand why we need to take the shirt off him for this game.

BUT

As a general rule, you should play the guys who will help you win today because you have NO IDEA what 2012 will look like.

Yes, he will be be a better player next year...but he'll be an even BETTER player if he has actual game time than if he sits on the bench. I don't think anyone will argue with that.

Also, how can a coach ask his seniors to go out there and bust their tails and ask them for "senior leadership" when he is throwing their senior year under the bus because he is trying to help himself in 2012. That is hypocritical and that doesn't cut it as a leader.
