How frustrating this must be for a great coach like Ralph. Their offense just looked absolutely anemic and out of rhythm last night...no drives...their only two scores were bombs early in the game.

He did fine when he had the previous HC's players....but it appears recruiting is the hurdle he is having trouble clearing.

It will be interesting to see how the Maryland alum's react.

they still love him b/c they only had 1 bowl in past 15 years pre-fridge BUT next year I think the crack will worsen. The problem for Fridge is he making 1.6+ mil but producing ~1mil results.

His health looks pretty bad as well. If he does not take drastic lifestyle changes all this will become moot.

And just what pray tell makes him "a great coach"? I think he's the second most overrated coach on GT message boards behind CJT. He's demonstrated an inability to develop quarterbacks since being at Maryland and yet he is constantly praised for that ability around here. Their offense last night looked like it has the past 4-5 years. Sure, he looked like a genius a decade ago when he had Joe Hamilton making all his plays work; but there are only so many Joe Hamilton's around.

Ralph the genius gets stumped again!

I very much agree with the above post that next to Tenuta, Ralph is the most over rated ex Georgia Tech coach in Message Board history.

I can not believe we actually lost to those jokers. 6 and 7 and in the Nut Bowl. I know their momma's must be proud.

Go Jackets!

How many years has he recruited his own players.

this is his 7th year. All his success was with the other guys players. Same way with Weis and others. PH had one of his better coaching years with BC's players. It seams for some reason some coaches do better with other coaches players.

I agree we should not have lost to MD and UV.

Yep Vanderlinden left a completely stocked clubhouse full of players. In Ralph's first two successful seasons, he had something like 21 and 20 returning starters. Even Duke would win with that returning.

Ralph's offenses have been inept however and his quarterbacks just never get it going. But in fairness this year, they had a slew of injuries and a bunch of defections on the OL. They lost two projected All-American OL this year, one to injury and one to grades (now with the Ravens). Then they lost their next best lineman with a broken leg against us. Additionally, they lost both of their top two centers!

I can't help but wonder if the steroids that I think Ralph feeds them is hurting their players. It's works for Merriman, Henderson, et al however. Just MO.

Ralph's first two teams clearly showed he was in control of the offense - they looked like Tech's old offense with lots of shifts and motion, multiple formations, quarterbacks going through four reads on passes, etc. They were terrific.

I wonder if as the years go on Ralph is letting assistants coach as he tends to the head coaching role. That is the only way I know to explain why this year's offense looked nothing like the good offenses he has had in the past. They are not as versatile by any means. And, they just have not developed a great QB.

Our loss to Maryland was our worst of the year. I believe Gailey lost his job this year at College Park and Carlottesville. I don't think DRad would have fired him even after another loss to UGA with a 9-3 regular season.

Come on...Ralph is a great offensive coordinator...he is just not a head coach. This year he is trying to do both and he has said he only spends 1/2 the amount of time on offense that he spent as an offensive coordinator.

Ralph orchestrated a great offense for us to win the national title...we were unstoppable and sent no one to the NFL from that offense with exception of some brief stints by William Bell.
He then went to San Diego and took a pretty pedestrian QB in Stan Humphries to the Super Bowl.
Then...he comes back to GT after 5-6, 6-5 type seasons and turned our offense into a machine behind Joe Hamilton and George Godsey....neither threw a pass in the NFL.

I do not think you can get around him being a great offensive coordinator.

He is just not a head coach....and I said that before he even became one...as did many others.

Everyone on the Maryland board seems pretty fed up with Ralph's playcalling. "run, run, incomplete, punt" they all say. Sound familiar?

Being a big, fat, lethargic, in denial, bag o' pus waiting for the ticker to explode doesn't really help recruiting.

"That dude's insane! I want to play for him!"

I think the only thing Joe did in the NFL was to hold a clipboard in Tampa Bay. He did throw some passes in Europe and in the Indoor Hockey Rink League.

You are correct, but I do think that Joe did put in a couple of years in the NFL.

Joe played a total of 4 downs in three years with Tampa Bay...handed it off each time.
He played a couple of downs in one game with Indy...again with Dungy.

Hence my statement that he never threw a pass in the NFL.

Ralph, Weis , and the Kansas coach should go on weight watchers, together they'd block the sun and moon.

I think Ralph would be better served naming an assistant head coach to do all the HC duties and just stepping back to be a full time OC. There IS NO DENYING that he was one of the most amazing OCs in the history of the sport.

Fat Ralph is a good offensive coordinator; but not a "great coach" as originally labeled in this thread. On this board he is often treated as one the three top offensive coordinators in the history of college football; and the premeir developer of quarterbacks in the nation. This praising of Ralph gets old. He was a good coordinator when he was here, and will probably be a good coordinator for some school in a couple of years if he doesn't turn Maryland around. 'Good' does not equate to 'Great' though, that and the overrated ability to develop quarterbacks is what gets tiresome.
