Matt Rhule

He could get most jobs in college football. Someone will outbid us.

Our last two hires were head coaches from Temple and Navy. I think that's our target pool...
All depends on who else is looking when we are looking. There was a lot of turnover last year, might be a quiet year in the head coach sweepstakes.

Assuming CDC gone, promote Key to HC, keep Long and Weinke, move Chaney to OL coach, ax Thacker and hire a new DC keeping most of the current (recently "upgraded") staff in place.

*ducks* and the above is TIC

Anyone know if Chaney is helping out with the OL now? I forgot he was added to the staff this year.

I’m gonna hire ur mom.

According to FootballScoop and other sources, Rhule is at or near the top of the very short list for the Nebraska gig. To state the incredibly obvious- if we have the money for the buyout, we need to get rid of CGC sooner than later if we want dibs on coaches we want

I think we are about to see donors step up and we are gonna finally pay a coach.

Maybe. But will the "good coach" accept the position when he sees that the school does not care nor will provide any support?

While a new AD can certainly do better than TDope, I wonder how limited the pool will be given the school's non-existent support, little to no NIL money and the portal being an easy out for players that show promise early on.

We ain’t getting Rhule if Neb wants him.

Rhule will get the best job available and that will not be GT.

Our best hope would be Rhule wanting to not be a HC so take the DC to work for Collins. Just to be clear that has about a 1 in 100k chance but better than Rhule being out HC

I'm definitely on that same boat. Landing guys like Rhule would be in the 1 in 100k chance for sure. I do know that if you're late to the party, you'll have to make do with whatever is left. What is the buyout right now anyway? $12,000,000 still? Drops to $7.2 million in December right? Judging from his press conferences, I'm going to doubt he would be open to negotiating his buyout.

i don't doubt you but it'd be stupid not to... he could get fired in december for 7.2M or quit now and make ~9M ...

It's time to hire a coach that is a proven winner rather than taking stock in a coach that we "think can do it" or "turn his career around."
You mean guys like Jimbo Fisher or Scott Frost, both proven winners, right? Nope, I'd rather hire a proven OC who wants to prove he can run the show. Look at Arkansas with Sam Pittman and he isn't squeezing Arky for a contract like Collins did to Tech.

Give him a 3 year contract. Current NCAA rules negate the old idea of a contract has to always be 4 years. The recruiting pitch is simple: As long as we're winning we're both here. As soon as we're not we both can leave.

Would love it, but I imagine he will have better opportunities. There's no real blemish on his resume at the college level, and no shame in a college coach unable to hack it in the pros.

There's a significant backlash any time Briles' name is even publicly floated for a job, and he was basically forced to resign from Grambling State as a result. Really just don't see him coaching big time college football again in any capacity.

Freeze would be a great hire, and maybe semi-realistic.

I kinda doubt Nebraska will get him either. They're the only high profile opening at the moment because it's mid-September, but once the carousel gets going in a few months, there will be more appealing destinations. They're in a recruiting wasteland and nobody regards them as one of the premiere jobs in college football anymore.

And Rhule taking a gap year as an analyst is 1000x times more likely than him taking the DC job anywhere, much less at Tech (especially since he hasn't coached defense in over 15 years).
