It is true, Notre Dame recruits and retains the creme of the crop each year. They are definitely ahead of Maryland in talent, however, it is evident, Maryland was very innefective in this game.
There is one thing for sure, past performances do not guarantee a team the right to walk on the field and win. The Maryland players have learned that lesson early this year.

MD looked pathetic. Clemson looked very good. BYU looked sharp. FSU and Rix are over-anxious, but man, do they hit and give second effort! UVa is young and confused. UGA can be beat.

That game is a living memorial to the folly of those who claim our success 2001 and prior was all about Fridge. If coaching is everything, tell me how a guy who lost to our interim staff from last year, Willingham, convincingly SHUTS OUT the often-praised-as-greatest offensive mind in the college game. It is very simple. Notre Dame has a ton more talent than Maryland, and now, finally, they have an at least competent coach. Jury is still out to see if he is more than competent. He had a TON of serious athletes (academics notwithstanding) at Stanford (Teyo Johnson, Amon Gordon). Fridge had a surprisingly athletic QB last year in Hill and a monster on the DL, Charles Hill, which he does not have this year.
GT98, I will agree with you partially. It is true ND has lost more battles over the past few years in the recruiting wars due to their lackluster performances.
However, they still have far more material than Maryland. Davies seems to be a nice guy, and he handles himself very well when he is the color man on some of the football games, but he has misused the talent at Notre Dame.
Will Willingham do as well as Holtz, or Parsegian? At this point, no one knows, but Notre Dame still has more talent than most college teams.

Having some talent versus having the "cream of the crop," is a HUGE difference. Notre Dame may have enough talent to be in the Top 30 that was misused under Bob Davie and/or had not matured yet on the field. I still contend that they are several teams that would take ND behind the woodshed so far where they would need directions to get back.
Now, ND w/the right coach won't have trouble getting back into the upper echelon, but they are still a couple of very, very good recruiting classes away.
It is a shame that they are not on our schedule this year [hopefully, they won't back out on us (again) for the '06/'07 series].

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Ummmmmm......no. Notre Dame has not had the "cream of the crop" in a while. The "cream" has been in the state of Fl. for the last several years. Part of ND's problem has been bad coaching as well as trying to run an offense from the 60's. Today's college football game is about speed, speed, and more speed. Think Miami would not put about 50+ pts. on ND right now? ND had 5 field goals and a special teams TD, nothing offensively. Maryland w/o a QB and their good running back, Perry had an inept offense at best. ND is a (currently) a shell of the team that they were under Granny Holtz in the early '90's. Now if Willingham can get a few wins, then ND might return to getting a lot of talent on its football team; it's not there right now.
