Mercer game thoughts

Here are a few thoughts. The team had 6 days to get ready this week. It was Mercer, not a lot to get fired up about. It was really hot. We didn't have any reason to show much on offense or defense, just basic stuff. We pulled key starters before it got too late in the game. On the other hand, Mercer was highly motivated and has a roster full of 3rd and 4th year players including a 3 year starter at qb. They played the triple option the prior week. Except for a fumble at the 2 yard line we would've hung 42 on them. Gave up 10 in base defense, not bad.

Now compare uga. No travel, playing Nichols State who started a freshman qb. Uga has a Heisman candidate rb, best freshman qb in the history of mankind (just ask 680 and dwag nation) and really should have lost the game.

This will be the first "normal week" our guys will have had. It should be better temps. Let's see what happens and if we can dial it up a little.

I luv u man!

Not enough butt hurt. TROLL

I'm a little concerned that GT didn't stick it to Mercer. We'll probably find out what kind of team they really are when they play Vandy.

A 25-point win, including a blocked FG and a non-fumble that was called a fumble a la 2014 COFH and 360+ rushing yards isn't "sticking it to" our opponent?

My main concern:

Shamire was benched in favor of true freshman, Parker Braun.

Shamire seems to be a better pass blocking OL than a road grader.

Y'all are the fans of a team who just went 3-9 last season. I would just take the W and not worry about whether we beat them good enough or not.

If they do that against Vandy then I'll feel a little better. A so so game against an FCS school with a newish football team doesn't excite me. Sorry, dude!

I expect Vandy to work on their short passing game all week in practice. Hopefully, we jump a few routes for some pick 6's

No need to apologize, I guess I don't see what would have made you excited, that's all. Sure, we all would've liked a 50+ point W but heck, we only had 8 possessions. A better officiating job would've seen us get 42, IMO.

This. Especially given their struggles at QB. I'd expect Roof to be playing a lot more press coverage on Saturday and load the box against a solid running game. Make them beat us through the air.

crosspost from the Hive:

Mercer got 10 points on 9 drives. 1.1 points per drive.
BC got 14 points on 10 drives vs Tech. 1.4 points per drive.

Let's compare to some week 2 performances from around the South East.

Nichols State got 24 points on 13 drives against UGA. 1.8 points per drive. (66% more than Mercer)
Troy got 24 points on 17 drives versus Clemson. 1.4 points per drive. (30% more than Mercer)
Western Kentucky got 10 points on 14 drives vs Bama. 0.7 points per drive (35% less than Mercer)
Wofford got 13 points in 10 drives vs Ole Miss. 1.3 points per drive (17% more than Mercer)
Jacksonville State got 13 points in 11 drives vs LSU. 1.2 points per drive (6% more than Mercer)
MTSU got 24 points in 14 drives vs Vandy. 1.71 points per drive (54% more than Mercer)
Eastern Michigan got 21 points in 16 drives vs Missouri. 1.31 points per drive (18% more than Mercer)
Arky State got 14 points in 11 drives vs Auburn. 1.27 points per drive (15% more than Mercer)

So out of that sample (p5 team vs little sisters of the poor) we've got better numbers than anyone except Bama.

I agree that "bend don't break" is frustrating to watch. I do not like watching it. It makes my eyes bleed. But the only way to honestly evaluate it as a system is on a points per drive metric. And on that metric, the team has done just fine so far this year.

I like what beej posted BUT when the QB from friggin' Mercer completes more passes against Georgia Tech than ANY OTHER TEAM HE'S EVER PLAYED AGAINST...it's a tough pill to swallow.

Hard to sugarcoat that. Much like it'd be impossible to sugarcoat whatever the hell it was UGA was doing against Nickels State.

I'm on the "results matter most" train, but the metric isn't opponent adjusted, which is important.

It's a good thing nobody ever won a game in which they were outscored but managed to compile impressive statistics.

Agreed. The 8:20 TOP on their first drive of the second half is what killed me. That's inexcusable.

Yet. I can see this happening in the near future with SEC OOC games where the SEC team is outscored.

Mercer converted four 3rd downs and one 4th down on that possession. We had them 3rd and 8 ready for a three and out and gave up a 16 yard pass. We also let their QB scramble for a 1st down on 3rd and 5 during the drive.

Mercer's next drive we gave up two 20+ yard passes before the FG block.

Mercer was pretty much ded after burning three timeouts during the first drive of the second half and just getting 3 out of it.

Ok, how about this?

Outside of 1 busted play, we held BC to the same score as Mercer, and fewer yards.

That drive was very bendy.

Bark Madley jumped all over the time of possession thing, where Mercer essentially equaled us. But he didn't bother to point out that one of our scoring drives was 91 yards in less than 2 minutes. If you add another 5 minutes to that drive, we are dominating. Bark is gonna bark I guess.
