Looking at the portal is 1000x different than reaching out to persuade players to enter the portal, which is an NCAA violation (hence 3rd parties).

It's standard practice though. Once in the portal as a player, your current coach doesn't have to renew your scholarship if you decide to return, so for the most part players don't portal up until they have a really good idea of where they're going to have a seat waiting for them. It's as underhanded of a system as the pre-NIL bag men were.
A substantial number of players who enter the portal never find a landing spot.

Your statement isn't true at all. There are parallels to real life in those examples I gave. If what you say is true, there would be no need for placement centers and career fairs, which are closer to portal life than having your next job/school lined up.

You really don't think that people usually (note "usually", not "without exception") line up other jobs before quitting their current one?

I'd say the vast majority of people using those services either a) already have a job and are looking to upgrade or b) left their old job involuntarily.

The number of people voluntarily giving up income and health insurance before securing another job is probably pretty small.

As I said, they were parallels to the examples I gave, which are 'mostly' involuntary separations. I don't disagree that some have already lined up their next school, but if that were generally the case, we would have seen many more announcements before now, and many fewer that languish in the portal, or don't find a home at all.

How long before players figure this out or are most delusional about their ability level?
"The grass is always browner on your side of the fence"

Gotta convince their families, too.

Players, after being told they're "the best" since they were toddlers, get a very strong, difficult to swallow dose of reality at the D1/P5 Level, where everyone else was also "the best."

Then there's the entourage strap hangers for the truly gifted S-As, some helicopter parents, and the wannabes.... they've been around forever.
