The one thing that I believe baseball, has right, is the minor league system. Those that want to get paid, have the option, to get paid. Those that need to improve, can play college ball, with a scholarship. The NFL is way behind on the times. I feel that we would benefit more, by having a minor league system. Let the schools, that actually still care about teaching, do that....teach.... Schools like Bama, UGA, Michigan, LSU and such.... they don't bring these 4 and 5 star kids in, to give them an education. In fact, I am willing to bet, they don't give a damned about their education. They care about winning and nothing else. If this kid fails making it to the NFL, his future involves saying "would you like to supersize that"?... So the question is this. Is it time for the NFL to create a minor league system and let schools become schools, once again?

The NFL creating a minor league system would change almost nothing about college football at all. You say college players could have the option to get paid there, but getting paid in college would almost certainly be much better. College football would have more fans, nicer facilities, and overall more money percolating around it than an NFL-funded minor league system, because college football is immensely popular and an NFL minor league would only appeal to a small subset of people.

So what you are really asking for is for college football teams to stop caring so much about winning (and all the money that comes along with it), and actually enforce academic requirements even if it hurts their chances of winning. And sure, I'd like that, as would most -- but it's a completely separate question from the NFL forming its own minor league system.

Also, don't forget, the NCAA held on for dear life to prohibit NIL. The reason it's allowed now is because the Supreme Court resoundingly rejected the NCAA's rules prohibiting it. That ruling would still apply even if the NFL formed a minor league. NIL is not going away, in case that was something you were hoping for.

Yeah, but if they have a minor league system how will 60 year old men leach off the efforts of 18 year olds by promising them “exposure”.

A minor league system would not have limits on how much time players could spend practicing and the players wouldn’t need to attend fake classes and do fake studying.

Most players with an NFL future would gravitate to a professional minor league system over an amateur college system, NIL notwithstanding. That’s assuming, of course, that the NFL is interested in a minor league system. Which they obviously aren’t because right now they already have one without spending a penny

The Minor League System

Team "T" does not have a lot of money or fan support and is in a weak league.

Team "A" has lots of money and fan support and is in a strong league.

Team "T" recruits a player, "G".

For two years, Team "T" spends time and money promoting "G."

Then, Team "A" notices "G" is good and offers him a promotion from Team "T" to Team "A."

"G" feels no loyalty or gratitude to Team "T", and happily moves up to Team "A", where he can make a lot more money.

This is the minor league system, as I understand it.

That's not how it works in baseball, which is getting heat for keeping minor league salaries down. Of course, that would push players back to college with NIL in place.

I really doubt that minor league teams would be able to produce an environment as conducive to preparing for the NFL as college teams do, even without the limits on practice time and fake classes. Top schools like Bama, Georgia, and Clemson pour an astronomical amount of money into facilities and training programs, and are often compared favorably to NFL programs in that regard.

I just don't think there's nearly as much money in an NFL minor league as its supporters seem to think. I know everyone points to baseball, but one of the reasons minor league baseball is able to exist in its current form is because college baseball isn't very popular and doesn't make much, if any money.

If college baseball were as popular as college football, it would be a lot more attractive to both players and major league clubs. Very few prospects would choose toiling in the minor leagues for minimum wage in terrible conditions over playing college ball.
