Misconceptions

Thinking back to all the optimism pre-season did any of you have some these misconceptions about the Jackets.

1) Our Defense would be better than last year. I expected our secondary and linebackers to be better than last year with more experience and the addition of Tarrant. I knew there would be a drop off in the D-Line but I figured if there were any positions on Defense that were easy to fill it would be the D-Line (compared to replacing a safety or a linebacker). I didn't expect we'd have no pash rush whatsoever and how bad that would hurt us. In watching highlights of the Miami - FSU game I was actually thinking there is no way Miami will get that open on us as our secondary is better. The last 2 games have proved me very wrong on this one.

2) The O-Line would be better and the offense would run more smoothly with having another year of experience. While we've racked up some yards we continue to struggle with teams that have a good D-Line and team speed.

3) Josh would be a better passer. Haven't seen any real evidence of this yet.

4) Our team would be tougher and execute well. I think we have a strong determination to win and that starts with Nesbitt but the lack of execution on the blocks in the last two games is really puzzling. With PJ being the perfectionist that he is I expected more and no to see many 3 and outs. I am pleased to see that this team never quits. We could've easily blown the Clemson game after giving up 27 points.

Lastly, I think this next game is huge. While some may compare this year's record at 2-1 to last years where we lost to VaTech I think the seasons have gone very differently thus far. We just got blown out by Miami on national TV and the deficiences on Off & Def are glaring as compared to a close lose to VaTech last year in a game we should have won.

I hope the team can put it together for UNC. Fortunately for us their Off isn't the same caliber as Miami

I may be drinking spiked kookaid but I think we are going to kill UNC.

I think we are so used to the way things worked with our prior coach that we have not fully grasped how things will work under CPJ.

If I'm wrong then I'll deal with it but I do not believe we have the tolerance for sub-par performance problems we used to have.

Didn't buy into #1 and believe that the line would kill our team. Was extremely suprised that we got so much pressure on Clemson in the first half. As for #2, I thought we were going to run the offense down everyone's throats because we were running it at Navy speed. #3 - we pass block better than last year, but Nesbitt has yet to check off the first receiver and go to a second or third option. #4 - building depth has been a myth. IF the scout team guys are better they should be starting.

The Miami game someone with their great wisdom decided to change the Defense. we were playiing at times with a 3 man front. basicly most of the time the players look like they did not know where to line up or who was going to blitz the defensive play calling was always being made at the last minute so they were constantly moving trying to get in position. The past rush was coming from so deep they could never get there in time to make a difference. So all you posters that are blaming the players you need to have been there to see the confusion. We have good players who play their hearts out. We just have average coaches. We have two offensive line coaches and we can't block S**t go figure. We have some real tallented playes just not tallented coaches. You have to be creative to find other ways to put the ball in the hands of the playmakers. I believe that's were the problem starts and ends.

Tech definitely played better (at least they were competitive the whole game in all three) in the first three games last year than the first three this year. Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm inclined to agree. I had a bad feeling going into the Miami game and it was worse than I expected. We have a young team and they will learn from this, and we have a great coach who will make adjustments. Virtually every team every year goes through some doldrums and stinks for a game or two. I would be more down on things if we played the last two games late in the season. Instead, I see this as a reality check. The posters who are the most upset are probably the same ones who were predicting a national championship this year. I'm still looking forward to an exciting year and I believe that starts with a huge game against UNC next Saturday.

So tell me...just when did those offensive line coaches forget how to coach? They were successful elsewhere. They were better last year, particularly late in the year. So they did something over the summer to forget what they know? I'm not absolving coaches of the responsibility for how the team performs...but you can't absolve the players either for what they do on the field.

Yes, sucessful at what level. Also keep in mind most ACC/SEC teams did not play against this type of offense untill last year. so a lot of them was not really prepared for it. LSU had time to prepare and and we all know the result. now everyone knows. so it's up to our coaches to make the adjustments. The coaches has to put the players in the position to make the play's. There may be one or two players that are not playing at the level that they need to be, but they are not on defense and they are not the skilled offensive players.

Seems like after following Tech for 25 or so years that I would learn that there is no such thing as knowing what the rest of the season will be like by looking at the last two or three games we have played.

I'll never learn.

I know he hasn't looked Good this season but you need to lay off Nesbitt.

The kid CAN throw the ball, but so far he hasn't shown it.

However, you have to take into account that it's not ALL on him.

He's still learning the offense thus most of his time in practice is focused on RUNNING the option.

When you don't practice PASSING or throw the ball during game time a lot, it's difficult to just pick up from his Senior year in HS. To be a successful throwing QB takes a lot of work, focus, time.

It's not something you can just pick up and go do and be successful.

It's about rhythm, timing etc....and when you don't make it a priority then you're going to be rusty which is all he is IMO

This kid was the #9 QB in the country in HS and did it with his Arm not his feet (although he was classified as a Dual Threat because he could do both ... and do it very well.

I'd bet that CPJ is going to begin putting more of a focus on throwing the ball in practice and working on the passing schemes going forward. He'll have to if he plans on having the season he intended

Bear in mind that our first two ACC foes last year were BC and VT, two teams at the bottom of the ACC offensive charts. Both those two teams won games on D. This year, we have played CU and Miami, two teams that will be at the top of this year's offensive charts, and two teams with greatly improved D's. These two games may well have been against the two division champs for this year.

Option teams notoriously start off slow, and we need to factor the above in, too.

PJ said himself that good teams don't lose twice in a row.

We will find out a lot about our team next weekend.

Those are simply ridiculous statements. There is NOTHING about this offense that opposing coaches have to figure out. Coaches spend all their time dissecting different schemes...they know what the theories on stopping any offense are. More time does help the players understand, but don't act like teams we face are coached by morons.

The players have to execute to be successful. It's really as simple as that. Yes the coaches have to make the right adjustments, but when the DL is reacting faster than your OL, there's not much a coach can do. When linemen and backs are missing blocks, or being beaten one on one, there's not a whole lot a scheme can do for you.

If we had only one of two players not playing at the level they need to, we'd be fine. We'd also probably be right in line with every other team in the top 20. Our problem is that we have more guys than that not focusing and performing. Hell, Dwyer said it himself. Simply put, the coaches have to do a better job, but the players also have to as well.
