Missed Facemask Call (USC vs. NCSU)

Nobody missed that call.

Even the ESPN guys, who had been talking about the mighty SEC all night, blatantly questioned that one. The SEC refs managed to screw over NC State. That would have been a touchdown.

There was another critical missed holding call earlier in the game as well. South Carolina benefited on that one as well.

The Ref's didn't dictate the outcome of the game, NC State had more than 1 opportunity to seize the lead. Don't forget that this is also the first game back for the referees. People make mistakes.

I don't think that screwed over NCST. The play maybe, the missed call, no.

If they made the correct call, NCST's pathetic inept ability to catch the ball or run the ball consistently still would have kept them out of the endzone. As I recall on that drive, they still got down to around the 30 yard line or so and couldn't do anything.

I agree with the OP, that was some BS. BUT NC State had plenty of chances to win last night. They lacked execution and their coach was horrible at play calling. They got away from the run completely near the end of that game.

One positive of last night. I realized just another reason why I love CPJ and our offense. I haven't seen such bad play calling since the Nix/Gailey era.

Yea, NC State still had their chance, and they blew it.

But that doesn't change the fact that SEC officials missed a blatant, obvious facemask penalty. That was a dangerous play. And Stevie Wonder could have seen it. You have to question the refs on that call. The SEC has a history of sending its officials out to make calls for its teams, and this is no different. If Swofford had some balls, he'd demand these officials get punished for it, but he won't because he's a pussy. Missing a holding call is one thing. Missing a clothes line across the face with three minutes left is the product of either gross incompetence or a willful desire promote one outcome over another.

Agreed. I don't know why anyone thinks 15 yards would have helped NC State. They needed to get in the endzone and they still would have had to complete some passes and show some semblance of an offense to get in even if the call had been made.

+1

Extremely predictable. How many times was he going to run a draw play after first down penalties.

your avatar.. its just WRONG. pick one team and go with it, dont mix OSU colors into Buzz, thats Bizzaro World..

REAAAALLLY UGLY AND STRANGE!

GT-100-buzz.JPG
much better!!!

That missed call was so obvious my wife called it as it happened. Though, not the reason they lost, they got a pass interference 2 plays later so there you go, they still couldn't score.

They had two dropped passes that could have been TDs both were hard catches but should have been caught. NCST just didnt make the plays when they needed to.

Go easy on him, he's just an ohio state fan.

which is fine, if he wants to associate himself with a tree and a guy in a sweatervest and a team that "almost" is good enough to go all the way...

but dont bring dem ugly colors on my Buzz! keep the two separate

Dude I agree. Change the avatar. A red buzz!?!? That's 100% total sacrilege.

Not a facemask. if so, the NCSt player would have made a scene about it not walk off the field

If it makes you feel any better, several of the SEC boards on TOS have mentioned their disgust with the missed call and consistently questionable SEC refereeing.

It was either a facemask or a horse collar either way it should have been an extra 15.

Absolutely a facemask (any time you tackle by grabbing the helmet, it is by name a "facemask.") He had both hands on the guy's helmet when he yanked him down by his head. And the worst part is that the ref (correct me if I'm wrong) did one of those jobs where he looked at the play, reached for his flag, but then did a quick "eye contact and body language" conference with the other refs, and decided that the flag would NOT be thrown.

Or maybe I just imagined that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it true that plays such as that are not reviewable? If not, I don't know why not. Esp when the safety of a player is involved, as long as they have an official in a booth with expensive video monitoring and replay capability, why not let the guy upstairs call something if it's that clear????!

You are correct in that penalties or missed penalties are non-reviewable. Which I feel is where most of the BIGGEST game changing things occur. Missed Pass Interference, false pass interference are huge ones especially in the end zones.
