MJ ripped for "no heart"

On the NFL Network's coverage of the combine, there is a ticker that constantly runs through Mayock's top 5 at each position. Next to each name, is a short little comment.

Next to MJ's: "Will blow up at combine, too much bad tape."

It is really, really, getting on my nerves.

As irritating as this is MJ has the right to either prove him right or prove him wrong so ultimately this guy's opinion doesn't matter.

Agreed. Before Karl Malone entered the NBA, some analyist (can't remember who) predicted that he would be a bust and Malone used that as motivation throughout his career. Jay Bilas made a similar comment about Josh Smith before the Hawks took him. The same thing goes on in football, and as you said, it's up to MJ to show on the field what an idiot this guy is.

Well then someone needs to let Josh Smith goddamn know. He's playing like garbage way too much.

I think "no heart" was a poor choice to describe MJ. To say that he underutilized his talents or seemed to disappear at times is more accurate. At times he would turn it on and be absolutely amazing. At times he really diappeared. Panther fans would say that reminds them of another DE with freakish physical ability - Julius Peppers.

Hearing from the Charlotte crowd now, this is a good comparison in my opinion. MJ has ability and (I think) is a hard worker. I think he will benefit from an NFL position coach actually teaching him some moves. I hope that puts him in the Mario Williams category where after 1 year, he looks great.

And Greg Geathers was way better than Peppers in college anyway.

I hear MJ has been working with Chuck Smith since the end of the season. SMART move, IMO.

He also weighed in at 266. That's going to help his stock.

He's still had a good career thus far for a player Bilas predicted to be "the biggest bust in the draft" with 17th pick.

Seems like I always saw MJ sprinting onto and off of the field. He was the most fired up guy on defense.

People like to criticize players for not having heart, for not being able to get the job done, for not being able to turn it up to 11... all these intangibles that can neither be proven nor disproven. It's just an easy and safe thing to discuss. It's cowardly commentary. And wrong I believe. Certainly uncalled for.

Josh Smith is terrible. Raw athletic talent who refuses to play smart and listen to his coach(sounds kind of like GT's team actually). If he had actually been on a good team in the early stages of his career, I bet he would fit that "bust" category a lot better.

He made his name by winning the slam dunk contest and making some good plays on a crappy team...as the Hawks get better and better he is going to have less and less of a role because, all factors considered, he just isn't that good of a player. Great dunking and blocking ability don't help when you are chucking up threes, making uncontrolled drives, or making awful help defense decisions.

As for the actual topic on hand...there's a reason this guy is an analyst now rather than actually working for the NFL.

I like Josh Smith but I see him being gone in a couple years when Atlanta gets a real Center. They will move Horford to PF then and let Josh go.

This guy is a dope. He even admits at the end that he only saw a handful of MJ's games, which probably means he didn't do anything and formed an opinion to sound like an ass. I'd believe him more if he wasn't simply some ranting lunatic on the power house that is the NFl network...

Mayock is hedging his bets though...he still lists MJ as the 5th best DE in the draft so if he blows up and is a star he can always say he had concerns but knew he could do it.

5th overall in the 40 yard dash and 3rd in the vertical jump. Didn't show up in the bench press top performers.

Some notable comparables to MJ's 40 yard dash time and vertical jump as these are the only two items that are known at this point. Apparently MJ didn't do too well on the bench press, but I don't know for sure.

Jevon Kearse weighed in at 262 lbs at the 1999 combine posted a 4.58 forty and a 37 inch vertical.

Mario Williams weighed in at 295 lbs and had a 4.66 forty and a 40.5 vertical. Williams did have an unbelievable bench pressing 225lbs 35 times.

MJ ran a 4.75 and had a 38.5 vertical. Haven't seen his bench but he was not listed as one of the top performers for a Dlineman in that category.

Yeah, BoR, Orakpo is putting on a performance at the combine, but MJ is close behind him, except in the bench press - do not know how much he pressed. Guess we will find it out later.
