"As you walk across the department, you ask, 'Why are we doing that?'" Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich said.
Radakovich was forced to cut $3.8 million from his department's 2008-09 budget and laid off 13 employees. This coming season, Georgia Tech's football team will travel by bus to road games at Florida State and Vanderbilt. In the past, the Yellow Jackets would have traveled by chartered plane to those places.
Radakovich still feels fortunate that Georgia Tech's athletic department is in better financial position than others. Coming off football coach Paul Johnson's first season, in which the Yellow Jackets finished 9-4 and beat rival Georgia for the first time in eight years, ticket sales for the upcoming season have nearly exceeded projections. Georgia Tech has sold nearly 24,500 season tickets, according to Radakovich.
"I think it can't be understated," Radakovich said. "It is certainly better to come off a season like we had and try to sell tickets in a tough economy."

Anyone think the bus rides will affect the players at all? :ugh:

Not too much since you get there the day before. Is it optimal? No. Will it hurt on field performance in a meaningful way? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

Plus, they can throw their KFC bones out the windows, instead of having to save them for the airport trash can.

I don't like it, puts Tech in a bad light and the players and the fans are sure to hear about it from other fans. What's next?car pools?

Both places are roughly 5 hour bus rides.

A plane ride is:
1) 30 minutes to airport
2) 45 minutes to load plane, security, taxi, etc
3) 60 minutes in the air
4) 45 minutes to unload plane and load bus
5) 30 minutes to hotel

Is the 1.5 hours really going to make a difference? NO

Plus road trips build comraderie!

:dunno:

Pretty much everyone is cutting costs...if it doesn't affect us on the field and it's a temporary cut that won't hurt us in the long run w/ recruiting I'm all for it.

Great point. Plus, it usually will take longer than 45 minutes for #2 above, even with a charter. Thus, making the time difference even shorter.

In addition, Tech fans could try to organize a caravan, if we can find places to stay and the state police let us.

Good idea. Beware of South GA cops though. I once got a speeding ticket en route back to ATL from fsu exactly 30 minutes after a friend got a speeding ticket from the same cop at the exact same mile marker.

When the Rubber Duck lays the hammer down, Smokey Bear charges him big bucks!

Not to sound silly, but were you and your friend speeding?

Beware going through Coolidge GA. The speed limit sign is before you even see the town on a busy four lane highway.

I got profiled in Eufala Alabama by a state trooper. Pulled me out of my car at midnight, accused me of transporting bombs and weapons of mass destruction, demanded that I acknowledge that he's a member by extension of the Department of Homeland Security, threatened to search my vehicle, and all sorts of mean nasty stuff. Then, after 45 minutes of this BS, he informed me that he does this all night long, to everyone, and anyone who cracks he searches their car for drugs. Gets one big cocaine bust per week that way. Then he sent me on my way without even a written warning.

My crime? I was going 8 miles over the limit.

Beej, you should have reported him.

Probably why he didn't even give him a warning because the document could have been connected with his police ID. Wouldn't be surprised if the officer removed his name tag during the search, too. Plus if this happens during the middle of the night the name tag would be hard to see anyway.
