The Tar Heels, who travel to Rutgers for a Thursday night game on ESPN, have never hosted a mid-week football contest in Chapel Hill since ESPN began televising Thursday night games in the mid-1990s.

Senior associate athletics director Larry Gallo said that because of the on-campus location of the stadium, the hospital nearby and night classes in session, it has become an "accepted practice" not to host because the traffic and parking flow would be disruptive to campus.

:pat:

I would NEVER want anyone from NC to be inconvenienced for a WHOLE night.

:laugher:

That almost makes me feel bad for UNC fans. Thursday Night football is a magical event to behold. Who doesn't like getting tanked in stat class at 3 in order to get a headstart?

I bet we have hospitals closer to our stadium than they have to theirs.

First of all you're talking about one of the 10 biggest hospitals in the country. Secondly, if you have ever been to Chapel Hill you would know that it's a town about the size of Cumming, GA and has no major transportation infrastructure. The biggest road in and out of the town is a 4 lane surface street. Imagine getting 20-25 thouand cars in and out of that campus on a Thursday night? When you compare that with the academic aspect it makes sense. Plus there are several other schools that don't host Thursday night games.

Plus Atlanta has some of the biggest highways in the nation. The traffic created by our games is merely a drop in the bucket compared to the 1-2 million cars that come through downtown every day.

And you're wrong about the hospital thing because they have their hospital on campus.

All I know is the last Thursday night game I went to, it took me over an hour to get from Vinings to Peachtree Street, so Eff those guys.

I don't know why Thursday night would be a bigger deal than Saturday for the reasons they mention. People still get sick on Saturday, and probably more accidents happen on the weekend than on Thursday evenings. Night classes can't be that big of a deal - heck reschedule the class once out of the whole year if it's that bad.

You're wrong. People dont get sick or injured on Saturdays... :D

You can probably throw a golf ball from the stadium to their hospital. Crawford Long is farther away than theirs.

But I do agree with the whole thursday night traffic equals saturday night traffic. I think they just don't want to keep up the locals past nine oclock.

Not sure Thursday night traffic = saturday traffic. Maybe at the end of the game it is the same, but pre-game? 5-7 pm traffic is bad, even at CH...and this is the time people would be getting to the stadium.

my issue it is ONE DAY a freaking year! They cannot endure that hardship.

To me this reeks of bush league but good for us. I am sure this will be making the recruiting rounds.

Recently some of these NC locals were complaining about Lowes motorspeedway so this guy started looking for a new place to put his racetrack. lol

It cost the local about ~$50 mil in tax breaks to keep the track in concord.

It seems these locals are a bunch of whiners and don't care about the ESPN exposure and etc.

One thing in all this doesn't make sense to me. UNC is a HUGE basketball school. Obviously they're hosting weekday evening home games, and they're able to deal with the disruption then.

beej, it took me 40 minutes to get from Hemphill to Piedmont with all the road closings. Every time I would try to take an alternative the GTPD would have the road closed or not allow me to turn left. Very frustrating.

Far less people. UNC is not the only school who does this...I've heard of at least a couple other schools. WVU is the same way...they have hosted only two in their history, and only one in the past 15 years. That one came last year, when they were in contention for the national title. I bet if UNC was ranked top 10 in football, they would find a way to make it work at least once.

I would have sworn that the UNC beatdown of FSU was a Thursday night game, but I guess not.

If I'm the AA and I wanted to piss off my customers, I would schedule a Thursday night game in Atlanta when the team would not be on TV, much less national TV, so the rush hour traffic would combine with the football traffic while the freeway is under repair.

Plus, I would change the method of mailing out season tickets without first warning purchasers that tickets would no longer be delivered to post office boxes.

Finally, I would schedule two I-AA teams in one season.

Now what could I do for an encore?

Rush hour traffic into ATL on thursday night? :ugh:

Nope. I was already in Atlanta and since I felt I shouldn't use the freeway due to construction and lane closings, I used surface streets which were clogged with people trying to get wherever they were going. It took 1 1/2 hours for me to go three miles.
