Morgan Burnett

I noticed some 3-3-5 with the 3 DE's, Guyton lining up on the line, and Morgan or Clark in as the 5th DB. This is different from the 4-2-5 nickel package from last season.....and quite frankly...it worked well.

That is the dime scheme. Three down linemen moving Oliver inside, three lb's in which Guyton can rush or drop back in coverage, and five db's with Burnett being the fifth.

Burnett had 3 solo tackles and 3 assists. I watched the replay and the sack - as awesome as it was - was not his best play.

There was a play in the first qtr (I think that's when it was) where he came flying from the other side of the field to make a tackle - I couldn't believe how much real estate he covered to get over there.

And he plays with such confidence! I heard he was good but I had no idea he was that good. He's a threat to leave early.

I thought the nickel scheme had 5 DBs and the dime scheme had 6 DBs.

Nickel is five defensive backs and dime is six defensive backs.

Not true. If that is the case, who were our 6 db's on the field?

Base - 4 dl, 3 lb, and 4 db

nickel - 4 dl, 2 lb, 5 db

dime - 3 dl, 3lb, 5 db.

We don't use 6 db's in our schemes.

If we didn't have 6 dbs on the field then it wasn't dime, unless we use different terminology than 99.9% of football coaches.

That would typically be referred to as a 3-3-5.

They're are different types of nickel and dime packages. The most common nickel setups are 4-2-5 and 3-3-5. The most common dime setups are 4-1-6 and 3-2-6.
Then there is the quarters package which is 3-1-7.

One other thing on this...I saw where Winkeljohn was saying Jamal Lewis was dropping into the nickelback spot and Burnett was playing SS. I haven't watched the game again yet to know for sure, but I'm inclined to believe him based on where MB came from on that sack.
