I already said it's not a big deal for Tech, because I know those numbers, we are one of the top 50 programs, but it's going to hurt others.
 
some schools might have to move some things around but the NCAA watches out for the little guy too :) right?
 
$2000 should have come from the NCAA general fund. If they were short on cash they can charge a % tax from coaches making millions of dollars on the sweat of the students
 
OTOH, GA Tech already offers a lot more to athletes than most other schools. A Tech degree is generally worth a whole lot more money than a UGA degree, for example.

yup at least an additional hundreds of thousands of dollars over a typical career in management

tech was among the worse in grad rates for athletes.....so sounds like a lot of em' aren't taking care off biznass

Our football 2009-2010 (latest) APR is 9th best in all of BCS. I think GSR improves in the next few years too. Tech is a lot more graduation-friendly of recent.

For the average student, yes. I wonder if that is really true for football players though, who will probably have a lot more doors opened for them as a former U[sic]GA football player than a Tech counterpart.
 
May have already been said, but the $2,000 is barely a drop in the bucket. Even with 85 scholarship players, it basically takes 3$ per ticket for the Clemson game.

Sounded like an interesting problem so I compiled the stats. These are for years 2002-2010 (AP only, sorry). Since there's only 9 years of data, I'm going to post teams with 6 or more appearances. The stats are only for years where the team made a top-25 appearance in the final rankings. If USCw went 0-12 in 2003 and didn't make the top-25, it won't count any of that in their ranking, points or wins/losses data.

14 teams. So yes, that's pretty static. In addition to that, there are 7 teams that make 5 appearances each. Of the 67 teams that have been ranked in the top-25 final rankings since 2002, the 14 above occupy 44% of all spots, and the top 21 schools occupy roughly 60% of all spots.

We seem to have opposite views. Here are some of my thoughts.

Tevin Washington found time for an internship this past summer. And he also had time to participate in 7-on-7 drills. So it seems to me that there is time for players to hold a job if need be. I'll concede that over the course of a year they can't put in the job hours that a non-athlete can, but as you pointed out, school, housing, and food are free. So while an athlete may not be able to generate the job related income of a non-athlete they also do not have the expenses of a non-athlete.

Some of these players aren't selling rings and things to make ends meet. There selling them for tattoos and other such things. For those players, I suspect the extra money would be flushed down the toilet. In other words, they have no money management skills. And if they had proper money management skills, they wouldn't need the extra money because they wouldn't be buying tattoos and things that they couldn't afford. That said, there are players with a legitimate need for some extra money, though I don't know how one would go about deciding who those players are.

For the players with kids. That's a tough spot to be in. That's difficult enough when you don't have athletic responsiblities. However, there's an argument to made that with the child, they have larger responsibilities than playing college football and if they don't have the money to support the child, they need to drop football and potentially school in order to get job so that they can suport the child. That's obviously a tough thing to do since with only a highschool degree job offerings are limited and if you had to drop out of school that hurts your longer term job prospects. However, it seems socially irresponsible to me to not make every effort to generate enough income to support the child.

Ultimately, I look at it this way: There are students who work 15, 20, or even 30 hours a week during the semester to provide enough income to pay for school, housing, and food. They also work 40+ hours a week during the summer break. So while the players have to dedicate a lot of time to practice and preparation for their sport, I doubt they spend anymore time doing that than the other students do at their jobs. Both groups are being compensated for the effort.
 
Well we are in agreement they can not work in fall. With weight class, film study, practice, meetings, school. . . How can they pay insurance, cell phones, take a date out, gas. . .maybe it needs to be handled more like financial aid where the school or ncaa determines how much you need

does the GT marching band get paid? I was amazed to find that the school I went to paid its marching band through concessions it made at the games--it wasnt much but it still sorta pissed me off a little bit.
