NCAA Changes

does the GT marching band get paid? I was amazed to find that the school I went to paid its marching band through concessions it made at the games--it wasnt much but it still sorta pissed me off a little bit.

Are you serious? That is truly unbelievable if accurate.

I know at other schools, kids in the band would get stipends if they traveled to away games.

Don't know about tech.

my view:: Play a year of college football. Sure--food is provided if you're on scholarship--dorm and school paid for too..thats great.....BUT you can't have a job. You have 0$$ coming in. You are totally reliant as a 18-23 year old on mommy and daddy and if they aren't in a position to help you out-you're screwed. I think giving 2,000$ per player will help these kids out-maybe keep them out of trouble....def keep them from selling things like rings to make ends meet..shit some of these kids have KIDS.
If a school can't come up with 2k per kid..they really need to re-evaluate their whole situation....its a small drop in the bucket.........Every game day is a big marketing event for the school-athletics directly and indirectly brings in tons of money every year.. 2,000 dollars isn't going to make the kids rich-or break the school...and thats a fact
how many posters on here decided to go to tech before you knew about the educational side of things? maybe you saw a game on TV and thought-hmmm..thats perdy cool.

Again - the kids can get a job. They get summer jobs all the time; I'm sorry, but those kids at Ohio State that got busted were spending 100s of hours at a tattoo parlor during the year. Work 250 hours and make your $2,500.

The issue is booster activity and the entitlement culture. Paying $2,000 is only going to make it worse. Plenty of college athletes have parents that send them some spending money, and plenty of non-SAs end up having to hold multiple jobs just to pay for school.

its nothing......how many millions do you get from just the TV contracts?? How many hundreds of thousands do you allocate for marketing?? (sports is marketing...take away your sports and see if anyone out of the south will know that you even exist.)...Just one football gameday--how much does that bring.....2k per student-is chump change.

and 0?? come on.....no offense but you didn't grow up here.....I think the number is a lot higher than 0 :) I love ya man but I think you underestimate how much money athletic brings in the grand scheme of things...

Well, we get $13MM from our TV contracts annually. How much did we spend on that big screen in the south endzone? How much did we spent on the indoor football facility, and the new basketball practice facility, and the new basketball arena? How much debt do we hold on construction related directly to football and basketball? Our debt service is at least $9MM per year, according to this request to raise student athletic fees. We just raised $96MM with a bond sale to finance expansion of facilities, mostly associated with football and basketball. So, forgive me if I don't think that the Athletic Association is flush with cash and can easily make up additional payments to athletes.

You can read this link to see some discussion of expenses in GT Athletics. It says we have 220 full scholarships supporting 375 athletes, and our scholarships cost ~ $8MM per year. That's about $40K per year, and only half of that comes from tuition; the rest is housing/food and other benefits. So, the GT football player gets $200,000 in benefits over 5 years.

how does it work for sports where partial schollys are awarded? Does a baseball player on 1/2 scholly get the full $2k or only $1k?

So 8 million of about 50 million in revenues goes to students, that's about 16%. I think that's a decent deal, NFL players get 48% of the revenues, but there is no NFL without the stars, but there will always be college football regardless of who is playing.

Summer is busier than actual season. . .they could work jan to june. . .

But over 66% of the students getting the 16% of revenue have literally nothing to do with generating it.

all the little sports are worked into the TV contracts too....ESPN buys the ACC for Basketball and Football and the sells random football games in packages with softball/baseball/lacross/gymnastics/swimming/volleyball to fox sports or liberty. Basically saying okay we wont air all these little sports that we promised--but we will make fox do it if they want to pick up a few football games.

Sure the football team may make a shit ton more but those smaller sports are helping out........

Have they talked to former players to see their opinion? Obviously guys now would be in favor for $$ but do they old guys think it's needed?

I don't think the 2k the ncaa is ruling on is a statement of "here-we make billions off of you, here is a piece of the pie"....as much as "we understand that you have expenses and we need to compensate you for the time you have given us."

yup, title IX

Nothing to do with Title IX...if there was no money spent on women's sports at all it would still be a majority of the students getting an equal share of the money yet contributing literally nothing to the generation of the money.

In fact, the only reason most sports exist in their current form is as a result of college football....

well thats Title 9, right?

Pretty sure Title IX is just equal money spent on men and women's sports. Nothing to do with men's swimming, men's tennis, men's track and field, men's cross country, men's wrestling, men's soccer, men's lacrosse, etc..

well a lot of schools have cut those mens programs anyways for title 9.......

not sure if I grasp your argument.....

this is what I gather from it::football is the only reason the other sports even exist to therefore they should be the only ones who get paid......

My department at work makes close to 30 million more than our other department---which actually barely broke even.......
So should I argue that they shouldn't get paid???

If that department generated almost literally no revenue this year, has never generated revenue in the past, has no chance of ever generating revenue in the future, and does not support the rest of your company generating revenue, then absolutely they should not be paid. The department should not exist.

If the company you work for is in the business of paying departments that do nothing to help the business, have never helped the business, and have no chance of ever helping the business then I doubt your company will be in business much longer.
