I'm predicting a close, offensive matchup. Not some midnight PAC 10 shootout, but very likely a 30-26 game. I'm not going to predict a score right now as I kinda like the Hive policy of no predictions until 24 hours before.
For ND's Offense vs. GT's Defense
1. ND's Offense I still find hard to guage, as they have only played awful defenses except for the all-world Ohio State defense last year. They didn't really play anybody within GT's range of defense (ranked about 10-30 in the nation).
2. With our starting front 7 playing, it looks like, unlike Pittsburgh, we'll have no problem stopping the run. With Richard and Anoai at DT and Wheeler and Hall at LB we don't have any problems there.
3. Last year, even in the Ohio State beating Quinn still had some great passes. Losing your #2 and #3 WRs as well as your TEs could put a damper on that production, but I would bet he'll have his passes against our green secondary. It's a bit like Reddick 3 pointers; you can't stop them. You can only hope to reduce them and overcome them. Look for a couple of long TD catches like what we had early last season against UNC and NC State.
4. Although we do have a green secondary, they also have a green WR corps after Samarjaja. The real matchup of the day will be Kenny Scott vs. Samarjaja and whether he can adequately cover him.
For GT's Offense vs. ND's Defense
1. Actually look for a good game out of the offense. Just like Auburn last year or Clemson the year before, the offense will look good after they've had so much time to prepare and with everyone healthy.
2. ND's secondary is, well, not the best out there. Just think Reggie's passer efficiency rating and ND's secondary is even worse. The main reason Calvin's stats underperformed other top WRs is because he went against multiple first-team all-americans and high draft picks throughout the season. Let's just say that won't be a problem against ND.
3. From what I've heard, ND's DL actually has received some praise. I don't know enough about them, but I do have much more confidence in our OL, especially with Wrotto, to be able to run it up the gut.
4. From what I can gather about the whole OC situation, Chan will still set the general strategy but he's not gonna call the specific plays. I would guess he would try to play his usual time of possession game to rest the defense and keep Quinn off the field. This will help keep offensive scores on both sides in check.
All in all, I think GT has many more fundamental advantages in this game, but Quinn is such a potent tool that he'll keep things close with his arm alone. I'm guessing a rather high scoring game which come down to the last few drives.
Maybe this preview helped y'all out some or maybe it was a complete waste of time and it wouldn't be the first time I was completely wrong. Oh well, I just know that September 2nd can't get here soon enough.
