New Auburn DC named......

Ted Roof was the leader of our Black Watch defense that returned GT football back to being competitive in 1985. He played the All-American Bowl against Michigan St that year injured. He was in incredible pain...but whenever he left the game Lorenzo White would rip off a good run. We ultimately held Lorenzo to something like 140 yds on 44 carries. That same game John Dewberry and Gary Lee were suspended for missing curfew...plus the backup FB.

Anyway....he is a good coach and a phenomenal recruiter.

This is a good pickup for Auburn.

I remember the fog bowl against ugay(same year I think)and he was playing banged up and everytime he left the game, worley or henderson or whoever their tailback was back then would rip off huge runs and as soon as he came back in the game the door closed..He's one of my all time favorite Jackets on the field, a great recruiter and evidently interviewer, but coach? We'll see....I really wish him the best.

It is impossible to be a "better coach than your record shows". Your record is the definition of your coaching ability. It is what it is. Good luck to Roof, but how can you hope Auburn does well? How can you wish Roof is a successful recruiter in our own backyard? It's not the same as hoping Ken Whisenhunt wins the Super Bowl, is it?

Hmmmm... that's a real thinker. Don't you have to take conditions into account? However his record was pretty bad. But I seem to recall that the year before Wake broke out they had like six losses of less than a TD. The overall record was bad, but you could see that Grobe was on the verge. If he had vanished after that campaign one could easily say he was a better coach than his record showed. Would one be right or is your original premise correct. I don't think that can be answered as a fact, just an opinion.

I have mixed feeling--I admire and respect TR as a player and coach--but I DESPISE Auburnt-- Good Luck to TR and a curse on the BUZZARDS!

I used to hate on Roof pretty seriously until I heard this:

...and I consider the source (RM) as reliable as can be.

Well did you consider that they were friends and teammates too. I love John Davis (not in an Architech way) and have the utmost respect for his opinion, but not on this subject. I have a hard time buying that GOL handcuffed Roof for three years straight. We can agree to disagree.

Ted Roof has proved over and over that he is a great football player, and a mediocre football coach...

I wish him the best of luck, but I don't want him back as a coach...

Ted was one of the grittiest football players to wear the Tech uniform. In the infamous fog game, Uga had a stable of Jonathan Dwyer types and Roof would just stuff them over and over again overcoming pain and exhaustion to seal one of the more dramatic wins I've ever witnessed.

I met him several times and its not hard to understand why he's such a good recruiter.

I hope he is wildly successful at Auburn.

"I hope he is wildly successful at Auburn????" WTF?
That presupposes that you want him to become so successful, and gain such notoriety, that the logical conclusion is that he becomes a highly sought after candidate for an open head coaching job two to three years hence such as Miami, Clempsen, Virginia, Maryland???? Or perhaps the hope is that Ted would become such a media darling that he would be on Radakovich's short list to replace Johnson? I don't get it. If he is indeed so talented, why not wish for him to be on Tech's staff?

You cut me deep.
Handcuffing Mr. Roof sounds interesting, though...

love,

I stand by what I said. I wish Ted all the luck in the world. He's paid his dues, he is a tireless worker, he's never screwed anybody over (that I'm aware of), he's honest and when he gives you his word he keeps it.

And I have to tell you that in all my decades of being an alumnus of Georgia Tech, I've never been challenged for wishing a fellow alumnus success. And here I am getting slobberknocked by a fellow alum for doing exactly that.

I wish success for all Tech alumns. Its good for the Institute and its the right thing to do.

No you're not. You are being asked why all the love for Auburn...and/or wherever the potential success might take Ted? I certainly don't wish him ill, and I don't know all the "insider" stuff that players have offered, but it seems to me that there are hundreds of coaches that are "good people" and not so good coaches. My observation from a fan's perspective has been Ted Roof put less than stellar defenses on the field. I will pull (as always) for Auburn against Georgia and Alabama.
