Just broke on Scout. DB Lance Richardson out of South Carolina. Not even listed in the Scout database, but just played in the SC all-star game...

6'2", 185 lbs...

http://georgiatech.scout.com/2/831585.html

Edit - according to GP1 of the hive:

"He has offers from Kansas State, Oregon, Pittsburgh and was close to being offered by Tennessee.

The reason he's not in either data base is becuase he was persusing basketball but blossomed as a football player and just recently showed up on the radar."

Maybe he can play point guard.

:)

In all seriousness, I like getting guys like this, even if they don't pan out. It shows that our coaches are casting a wide net for the types of players who might excel at Tech.

And maybe he can play point guard.

For those keeping track, here's our numbers by position:

DE - 4
DT - 1
LB - 2
S - 2
CB - 1

QB - 2
RB - 1
FB - 1
WR - 2
OL - 4

10 each for O and D.

Pretty well rounded class so far, and seems to address our immediate needs as best as possible. Bare in mind that some QBs are going to switch to AB or WR in the long term, and that we're fairly deep at AB in the short term, once we get healthy again.

Note: There may be some D guys that we're looking at on O that I miscounted. The above is just from the 'scout' position.

Lance Richardson is a safety.
Roderick Sweeting and Jemea Thomas will start out at CB first.

Great news! Welcome to the Flats Lance!! Can't wait to see you on Saturdays!!

Hiver, did he visit this weekend?

Is this someone the staff has been watching or did they notice him during the game? He must have made a heck of an impression upon them...to go from "under the radar" to committ so FAST...Or at least "fast" as far as "public knowledge" goes....

Any insight/critiques available on Richardson? Just curious....

Welcome to the FLATS Richardson!

i've heard that this kid only played football his senior year of high school and as a result, did not garner as much recruiting attention. He is one heck of an athlete and from what I hear our coaches were very impressed and apparantly made the comment that he was a kid that we "had to have".

right....he was going the basketball route at first but had a great year as a senior. I am pretty sure he played football as a junior and senior though. He has KO returns for TD's, INT's, etc....apparently was a game changer.

Given the kind of regard we GT fans have begun to hold for (most) of our coaching staff (in and of itself proof of their quality after Gailey), someone who we "had to have" as hiver quoted after having so little playing time must be a hell of an athlete. Could be a big contributor if things go well.

Sounds a lot like Antonio Wilson, the DE we took who only played 4 HS games before being in a car crash but was dominant. Word on the streets is Wilson is going to be a very good player.

BTW, on Wilson's film he was squeezing down the off-tackle play in textbook fashion...completely square to the line. He did not look like a guy who only played 4 HS games.

Pretty good catch especially when you factor in that we suck at recruiting.

;)

Like the comparisons to Vance Walker. Now that would be awesome!!!

I wonder if this happened quickly because we thought we were getting the safety Myles and had to relook at things.

Very interesting point mid. Highly likely.

On another note, while I trust this staff completely, I don't understand how someone can say that this commit contradicts the 'sucky' recruiting argument.

This recruit is a good one if we use the 'Recruiting Rankings by the BOR Standard' because Oregon (U or St - don't really matter which) and Texas A&M are excellent schools to have offers from. Personally I am disciple of that school of thought. But that doesn't change the fact that the guy is unranked by the rankers and that matters to an awful lot of recruitniks. Isn't the recruiting rankings the only standard by which someone could propose that we 'suck' at recruiting?

this is similar to Vance Walker and Sedric Griffin...who were discovered by us at the Shrine Bowl....except Richardson was seen at the South Carolina North/South All-Star game.

South Carolina is definitely a backwards enough state to have players lost in the lower classifications and smaller schools...to be discovered late.

If you read the Rivals article you will also note that GT staff trainer Clay Farr also went to Ware Shoals....a 1A high school.

I trust our staff to review film and bring in the late recruits. They no a lot more about who can compete than I do.

This does not mean I would advocate waiting on 100% of our recruits until January to find the hidden gems...you definitely have to sprinkle in the can't miss guys that everyone knows about. You just do not need a full class of them. (i.e. Utah beating the snot out of Alabama!).

Some of the word on him seems to be that he isn't ranked by the services because he was assumed to be headed to college to play basketball until he had a great senior season. People have known about him, but not as a football prospect.
