New DC?

But, this was my biggest fear when we he hired P.J., He has a history of great offense and lousy defense.
His only history of being responsible for defense is Navy, as the boss of the DC. And to show that as proof for lousy defense is not fair since their defense is outweighed like crazy in addition to not having the same talent. They can't even pressure the quarterback a bit.

The title of this thread should be changed to 'Open for Punch square in the nuts"

This may not be a total disaster but it will be a significant downgrade from Tenuta. The guys been around the block a few times and has long and not very impressive record. I really thought we would hire an experienced, respected DC.

yeah I'm a little confused by this hire, too... i wonder if Ellis Johnson wanted to bring his whole staff with him, as he supposedly wanted if he got the USCe job? (Reportedly that's why VanGorder got it over him). If so, that would mean no Giff Smith & BJM, which would have been disastrous...

Maybe CPJ wanted to keep guys like Giff, Jeep, BJM while hiring an experienced DC, which would make Wommack make sense?... he was good at So. Miss for two years but pretty mediocre at Arkansas with quite a bit of NFL talent...

lol. We are going to be awesome on offense and suck on defense. Great.

Tell me why Giff Smith was not promoted to DC?

I will withhold judgement until I see some actual results, but a twice fired DC is not an inspiring choice.

I would have rather seen Roof as DC.

Since we apparently open with Jacksonville State, I say we wait until half time of the second game.

If this season has taught us anything at all, it is that no one can discount any ANY team anymore. Lets not forget:
Appalachian St. vs Michigan
UL Monroe vs ALA
South Fla vs WV
At present, Jacksonville State may be our hardest game of the season.

APP State is a 1-AA powerhouse, UL Monroe is 1-A, and USF is darn good.

That said, the Jax State game will be good to see knowing that we can see the new offense for the first time and not have to worry about losing.

Folks, let's take a deep breath and settle down a minute. My first thoughts when I read the news about Wommack were that I was sure less than thrilled with the hire. That said . . .

CPJ may be dumb but he ain't stupid. (And, no, I'm not calling him dumb. Although there seems to be a lot of questioning of his intelligence because of this hire.) But don't you think CPJ sees the same track record for Wommack as the rest of us. Don't you think that during the interview process Wommack had to explain what the problem was at Ark and why his D ranked so low?

Each candidate (4?) obviously had to give an account of their career and their defensive philosophy. Giff, Ellis, whoever else, evidently came up a little short in CPJ's mind. Did Wommack come out way ahead or did he come up "less short" than the other candidates? Only CPJ knows. But the fact is, in CPJ's mind Wommack was the best available candidate.

I learned a long time ago that there are always more factors in any personnel decision than are visible to casual bystanders. We won't know all that went into the decision. It's human nature to speculate where we have incomplete information. And, unfortunately, it seems to be human nature to think the worst when speculating.

When it comes right down to it, though, we don't have much choice but to wait and see how the full staff shapes up and what product they put on the field.

And now, to quote CPJ, "TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!"

go back and look at his performance @ ark. his stats were inflated in 2002 b/c of a 6ot game @ tennessee (41-38) but the end of regulation was 18-18, and a 7ot Game with Kentucky that ended up being 71-63 or something crazy like that...then throw 2004 in with the loss of several key players to injury and NFL departure...

All I'm sayin' is give the man a chance...he's proven he can field good defenses @ USM, so why not here...let's let him coach before we crucify him.

I say to put the bitching on hold until we actually see how our D performs next season.

I agree.

Disappointed to hear from many of my South Carolina and Miss friends that he is a horrible recruiter though. Of course, Tenuta refused to recruit, but had guys like Smith, Jean-Marie, Modkins, and Geis to do it for him.

I didn't want to see a bunch of new guys ruin our defensive continuity. That's my only real concern.
