New Defensive Coach?

I don't think you guys will be very excited about CCK after the Sun Bowl. We're going to bring in someone else.

LSU fired their DC before playing us and hired a 3O specialist just for the Peach Bowl. Is there a "Southern Cal Specialist" out there somewhere?

Yeah, it's Monte Kiffin's caretaker.

Why would a big time DC candidate want to come here at this point? Since CPJ is dangerously close to being officially on the hot seat, I would think that a high profile candidate isn't gonna hitch his wagon to our cart at this particular time.

CPJ's ONLY chance of surviving is to revamp the D staff (for the most part I think) and getting a new O line coach, and of course give a darn about ST.

LOT of work to be done, but CPJ's ego assuming he is an O genius is a big FAIL.

Who hitches wagons to carts?

Why not? If he turns the Defense around, it could set him up well as the top contender for the HC position if Johnson were to be cut loose.

Good point. I don't think a high profile DC was ever in the cards anyway. Perhaps a fired HC who is gonna make a lot of money from their former employer regardless if they work or not. Sound familiar?

They need a young guy who has already proven himself at a smaller school.

It had been donkey years since Groh had been an NCAA DC. We missed on that one. But, if we can get Ellis Johnson or Spaz, who've been proven at the big level and who are getting payout checks, why not?

Like someone else said, a high profile DC probably won't come to our program. We need to get an up and comer. Look at how well that worked for Clemson with Chad Morris.

Anyone looking at PJ's contract knows he has at least 2 years before anything bad can/will happen. That plus the fact we can score on most teams is enough to give a good DC some comfort. What I don't know is what we have budgeted for the hire or how much PJ is willing to chip in to make it happen.

Besides JacketFan77's good point about wagons and carts, I also think that a good DC just might come here thinking he'd have a shot at being HC the next year if he does a good job.

We might score on "most" teams, but we better start scoring against GOOD teams.

Sure - if we are going to win the ACC or beat UGA you are right. I am more talking from the perspective given that a DC wouldn't come on board here because the ship is already sunk. I don't think that is the case as there is a runway from the contract and a reasonable to at times very good offense on the other side.

The pay or rather budget for pay is an unknown.

A downside is the unknown at AD and how PJ plus the new AD will mesh. But for most DCs, a 2 year plus runway is a reasonable place to light.

I disagree, we get about $10 million in ticket revenue at Bobby Dodd. If attendance goes down 20%, it quickly becomes a push from a financial perspective and a new AD would want to put his stamp on the program. I don't think we could afford to keep him if we're 6-6 or worse this time next year.
