Its just about time for me to start following the NFL, mostly to ease the withdrawal symptoms of NCAA football being over. So good a time as any to start asking some of these questions.

#1 Who's at the top... er, bottom, of the heap and in the lead to get mr Bush these days?

#2 Which of our guys do you think are going to be drafted and what rounds, which ones free agent, etc?

#3 Seems like a lot of soso talent in the QB area in the NFL these days, or maybe defenses are just on an upswing. Is that going to make Quinn's stock rise even more and give us the benefit of a fresh Irish QB to break in come September?

Im guessing that Henderson will probably go in rounds 2/3, Landry 3/5, Houston 3/5, Wilkerson 4/5, PJ (not too fast, but a pretty good power back, and an excellent blocker) 5/7, Reis/Bilbo undrafted but free agents, Bilbo does scout team /nfl Europe, and Reis makes noise on special teams for the next decade.

I'd be interested to see if the Aint's make a run at Leinart and the Niners go after Bush

Otherwise it's all up in the air from there

I think Bilbo gets drafted, NFL teams are always willing to take chances on guys they consider projects. Some team will look at his size and speed and jump to take a chance on him. In fact, if he does well at the conbines it wouldn't shock me if he's the first Jacket taken.

I would like nothing better than to see that happen for DB, would be a great reward for all he's been through and done for Tech.

But it just isn't going to happen. Good Luck to DB but I don't see him getting drafted and certainly not ahead of at least a few players.

Loser of the Texans/49ers game this weekend gets the top draft pick. This game could get ugly.

Loser of the Texans/49ers game...

So do you think one team really tries to lose? As a team, I can see why you would want the number one pick. However, would the players really want to lose just to get it? Certainly is a weird situation to be in. What would happen in the unlikely event that they tied?

Re: Loser of the Texans/49ers game...

I think the players would probably play that much harder not so lose, so it doesn't look like they gave up the game. Pride is going to make them both play incredibly hard. But I don't know, worse things have happened in sports.

Not to often that theres truly a lose-win situation.

Re: Loser of the Texans/49ers game...

Some sports writers suggested having the winner get Reggie Bush. Would be interesting to see, but obviously the NFL wouldn't allow it.

A tie would give Houston the first pick.

I hate the spectacle the media is making this into. When you really look at it, Houston doesn't even need Bush but if they end up with the first pick the media is going to go crazy if they don't pick him.

Re: Loser of the Texans/49ers game...

But they do need other stuff and can deal the #1 pick away for some sweet options

The first pick will hold a lot of value this year. I could see them trading it away and rebuilding the OLine and maybe getting a QB.

Here's a pretty reputable draft site - http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/

Only three tech players made it in to his positional rankings (PJ, EH, GW).
PJ is 16th out of the RBs, and 20 RBs were drafted last year, so he will probably go in the 6/7.
Henderson is 12th out of DEs, and 21 DEs were drafted last year, so I imagine he will go in the 3/4.
Wilkerson is 10th out of OLBs, and 17 were drafted last year. He might go in the 4/5 range.

It won't happen, but in my fondest dreams, this is the scenario:

- The Falcons trade Vick, while he is still considered a good NFL QB (I don't think that opinion, to whoever finishes with the #1 pick in the draft, and use the pick to draft Bush.
- They promote Matt Schaub to the starting job.
- They then either design a two-running-back offense to make use of both Bush and Dunn (like the old Kiick and Csonka days of the Dolphins), or trade Dunn for a game-breaking wide receiver.

It's okay to dream, right?

HA, they'd never trade Vick. He might be might be slowing down a bit already and not making the plays that he would have made a couple years go, but the jersey sales alone make so much money for the falcons he's worth more than just on the field performance. The media attention, and the growth of "falcon nation" or whatever the hell they're calling it these days can largely be attributed to the excitement that mr mexico has generated.

Of course...I agee with you. That's why I said "it won't happen". But isn't it fun to imagine the Falcons as a championship contender? Which, by the way, they will never be with Vick at quarterback.

NonG,
Seeing that you live in Pitt, you may enjoy this local radio observation made today: That Vick was more successful under Dan Reeves than he is under Greg Knapp.

To me it's sad to watch him fail in this offense. You seem to have a great interest in the NFL.
Do you think Vick is trying to ridiculously prove that he can do what the "experts" say he must do (pocket qb)in order to be a "real" qb, or what?
Does he look slower to you? I am not baiting, just curious.

He lost a step after the leg injury. After he made the comment about getting the critics off his back with his passing performance at Miami, it certainly seemed like he's been trying to prove a point for a while now, and not just doing "his thing" out there. He's also been hampered by lingering injuries this season; he had a leg brace on until last weekend among other things. He definitely looked better passing under Reeves, and the statistics show that, but the WCO is very hard to master. Look at how long it took for McNabb to put up decent passing numbers (one could argue TO was the catalyst for that), same with McNair, Steve Young, etc. Next year will probably be his last chance to prove that he can be effective passer in the NFL.
