This thread is hilarious. Some people who are saying that Dieke, Sims and Finch are going to get drafted are the same ones that said Cross, Orwin and Barnes were going to get drafted. It's comical.
If Uzzi didn't get drafted, Finch, Jackson, and Bailey aren't getting drafted. Mason has a small chance.
You are hilarious. Comparing everyone of those players to Uzzi is semi-ridiculous. One, Uzzi has an injury situation. Two, Uzzi did nothing to improve his draft stock once last season ended.
When you are talking about players in the 6th-7th round, usually you are talking about players with a very high stock that fell (see e.g. Dwyer) or players that had very good workouts at the combine, pro day, etc. With Uzzi (and Smith), neither worked out for scouts. Further, Smith had off-season surgery and Uzzi wouldn't disclose details on his injury.
Those concerns and lack of ability to work out easily could have cost Uzzie and Smith 1-2 rounds. Cross and Barnes were signed as free agents almost immediately, so its not as if they were that far away from getting picked. At the end of the day, you only have to impress one team to be drafted.
Dieke is 6'6. That puts him in a much different category of player than Cross. Not to mention Dieke and Cross's stats are nearly identical for last year. If Dieke makes some improvement (and he should have favorable situations opposite Attaochu), he could project as a 6th or 7th rounder. If the question is "prospects," its certainly not laughable that he'd get picked - especially with the 6'6 frame.
I'd agree that Finch will likely not get drafted. I think he's about 20 lbs too small unless he is somehow able to put on some weight between now and the draft.
I don't see how its crazy that Sims would get drafted. I don't know that he will, but he did look pretty good last year before he got hurt. If he's able to put up 1200 yards, a reasonably big if, he'll stand a good shot.
In terms of other guys who have a shot given improvement and strong play, Shaq Mason has a great body type for a guard, as do Errin Joe and Thomas O'Reilly. Those guys will all be ~310 pounds at least going into the NFL draft. There's demand for that no matter how you slice it.
I don't think he would get picked, but I could see teams experimenting with Waller as a free agent at other positions.
I'm going to go with Synjyn Days as a darkhorse candidate. He's 6-2, 225 and is probably the hardest runner on the team. If either he or Deon Hill bust out this year, they have a chance (albeit probably not a great one).
On defense, I like what I see in and hear about Gotsis. It's very hard to take a Sophomore, whose upside is somewhere in the range of 4th-7th rounds, and give a reasonable projection. I think you can say the same thing about Hunt-Days, although his body type is insane for a LB (6-3, 252). I think we've got enough size in the backfield that any number of those guys could be drafted.
Realistically I think we'll probably get 1-3 picks a year for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't read too much into this year though.
EDIT: Sims looked good when he came back from being hurt
