ESPN has 1-10 as:
  1. Lions - Bradford
  2. Rams - Andre Smith (ALA, OT)
  3. Chiefs - Stafford
  4. Seahawks - Aaron Curry (Wake, LB)
  5. Browns - Aaron Maybin (PSU, DE)
  6. Bengals - Eugene Monroe (UVA, OT)
  7. Raiders - Michael Crabtree
  8. Jaguars - Jason Smith (BAY, OT)
  9. Packers - Gerald McCoy (OKLA, DT)
  10. 49ers - Malcolm Jenkins (OSU, CB)

The Lions need to trade out their pick for more draft picks and draft a defense. Their major need is defense not QB. Calvin can make a pedestrian QB look good, and quite frankly, a Bradford/Stafford draft is a weak draft. I wouldn't waste a #1 pick on either of them. I'd draft a DE like Johnson before I would draft a QB like Bradford or Stafford.

Their entire defense is awful and they need a pass rush, a DT, and a secondary.

Given Detroit's abyssmal past draft exercises (with the obvious exception of Calvin, who had a pro-bowl quality year), let's see if they grasp the logic of trying to build a defense instead of throwing another middle of the road non-#1 pick-deserving $40 million dollar a year rookie QB into the mix.

If they trade down and end up with another pick, along with the one they got from Dallas, they can actually have a shot at starting to put a D together.

Their new GM, Mayhew, is relatively well regarded and can be nothing but an improvement over the years of fiascos that Millen put them through.

Problem for Detroit (and other teams picking in the Top 5) is that many teams no longer want to trade up and take a player so high and have to commit a huge salary for an unproven player (especially w/a hard salary cap). For every Matt Ryan, you have several Ryan Leaf's, Aikli Smith's, Alex Smith's etc.

The Lions would love to trade down and pick up several draft picks, doubtful that they will be able to.

This may change if the NFL gets the rookie salary cap in place that the owners desperately want.

True enough. But who's going to throw the ball? They don't even have any pedestrian QBs on the roster. I agree that they need to trade down to try and get more picks but at some point soon they need a real QB because there's only ONE Calvin on their roster.

Better for Detroit to build defense through free agency, imo. With the cap going up by approximately $80 gazillion this off-season there basically is no cap for next season, so they should be able to go buck wild.

Also, that keeps them from throwing WAAAAAY too much money at Matt Cassell like I can see them doing.

Brady might have to miss the 2009 season as well, given reports of his rehab being behind schedule and that he may need another surgery to fix scar tissue. That would put the Patroits in a tough spot--commit bigger bucks to Cassell (w/Brady still the franchise) or pick up someone else and hope for the best, looking towards 2010.

Cassell will be getting paid from someone--there are enough teams w/absolutely putrid QB play, that he will get a big contract from someone like the Chiefs, NYJ (if Favre is done), Tampa Bay, Bears, Seattle, Lions, San Fran, Jax, etc.

Matty Stafford's career experiencing a horrifying Chan-tastic death in KC would be amazing.

Does Smith's illegal contact with an agent and subsequent bowl suspension cause him to drop?

As an aside, whatever agent contacted Smith should be banned by the NFL for two years. The college game is good to the NFL. The League needs to keep things like this from happening.

I hate UGA, but I think that Stafford should be rated above Bradford as an NFL QB in this draft. If I was Detroit I would go with Stafford over Bradford no doubt. Stafford has a quick release that cannot be taught. Bradford plays in a conference where QB stats are notoriously great, so I am not convinced that he will succeed in the NFL.

I repeat ... I HATE UGA, so this is extremely hard for me to say what I have said.

Since the Packers need a DE as badly as they need a DT sure wish they'd take you know who

Michael's stock seems to have slipped just a little, not sure if he's seen as a top 10/top 15 at the moment. Granted that's just from reading a few draft projections so who knows.

But if the Dimitroff/Smith regime decides to cut bait on Jamaal Anderson and get another pass rusher, Michael could be a good fit for the Falcons.

It would take Bill Parcells coming in as a GB in Detroit for them to have any hope of being competitive in the next two years.

I have zero faith that anyone else could even begin to know where to start in the rebuild.

Is Michael Johnson good enough against the run to play in other than passing situations next year?

He is a great pass rusher, but when NFL tackles run block him, can he hold his ground?

Detroit could also trade picks for veterans. I don't really care if they have a solid defense as I am not Detroit fan. I just want Calvin to show off a bit.

Calvin needs a QB and an OL to protect that QB.

Contrary to the opinion of most NFL scouts, I think that Tebow is going to do well at the next level. The NFL has grown disenchanted with QBs who can run after being infatuated with them for a few seasons. But a good solid QB who ALSO is a threat to run is still an incredible asset. Tebow fits that description IMO.

A good running QB who also may be a threat to pass is not as viable as an NFL QB. They were successful until the defenses figured out how to play them to force the pass.

I agree. As a business man I would always trade out of the top 10. You can find much talent (and less costly) in the latter rounds.
