NFL players missing in boat off Gulf coast...

Thanks BuzzLaw. I just thought it was strange about families knowing a GPS coordinate, but I guess this is common for fishing.

Given this situation, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to give someone your coordinates any time you were going out fishing, just in case something like this were to happen.

one of my sailing buddies sends us his GPS coordinate in a link via email that will take you right to the location on Google Earth, but then i do work in a GIS related industry...

This is a very serious story. I've been in peril/fear for my life in the ocean (wet. that means in the wah-wah) more than once. It's not funny. I'm praying they can find these other guys. No way I'd ever go offshore in a 20 footer. I lived in that area before and the weather can change on you like the Bermuda Triangle. Prolly can anywhere at sea, I'm just saying. This ain't Lanier on a busy weekend.

QFT

If I'm in anything less than a 30 ft boat, I want to be able to see land.

I am sorry for these families and for the Wolfpack in what seems to be a tragic loss.

Dude, people go out offshore in 20 footers all the time. That's a common practice around the coast. I'm not talking 35 miles offshore for Marlin and Dolphin, more like 10 to 12 miles for mackeral and grouper. They were also in the Gulf of Mexico where its common for boats that size to go 20 or 30 miles offshore because its a lot calmer with a lot smaller tide swing.

Is it typical? No, but done often and safe in the proper conditions.

Those guys were in an Everglades 21 foot offshore fishing boat. An Everglades is the rolls royce of fishing boats under 30 feet. Go look what a 21' Everglades sells for. Its about twice as much as a Sea Craft and I consider that to be the best small offshore boat.
