Not feeling good about anything

Not to be a pessimist but...

Football

Does the football program really have a bright future? That's debatable and I would argue odds are against it. Why are we getting so many decommits and transfers? I know we have a new coach and system, etc. but this is unusual. Is anyone really excited about the type of offense we will be running next year? I'm not. It's the kind of offense tailored for lesser talented players that have to compete against superior talented programs. It gives these players a better chance to win but we will never dominate with this offense. Is anyone really excited about the new coach? For all the alking DRad has done about bringing excitement back to the Flats, he seems to have contradicted himslef with this hiring.

Will we ever beat Georgia? Hate to say it but this rivalry is looking more and more like the ND-Navy "rivalry". I never thought I would see the day where we lost 7 straight.

Basketball

Ugh. What happened? What is the problem with this program? How is it that other programs can be consistent year in and year out but we can't? Is poor coaching to blame? And please, don't tell me how different we would be if Crit and Young stayed. I'm not so sure. And besides, this is reality and good programs overcome these hurdles. This team looks uninspired and lacks attention to fundamentals. No real leadership either. Frustrating...

I know I will get flamed here by those that view the world through rose tinted glasses but I'm being realistic here. The fact is undeniable. Our football and basketball programs are in complete disarray and I don't see it getting any better any time soon. Is this the beginning of the end for Tech?

We have a new coach and system - not at all unusual.

Yes, I'm excited. And GT always has been at a disadvantage as to talented players against the UGAs of the world.
Is anyone really excited about the new coach?
Yes, quite a few people are excited. If a coach was ever a perfect fit for GT, this is it.

Can't help you with basketball, but I'm confident DRad will take steps to fix it, if CPH doesn't. New assistants, different focus, etc.

Our football and basketball programs are in complete disarray
No, they aren't. Not by a long shot.

too early to tell on the FB question. MANY of us knew it would be rough getting rid of CG and did not want to pull the trigger yet but too late to worry about that.

We may be talking about naming the stadium after PJ in 6 or 7 years. Look at Rutgers. That guy took a deadend program and has made them a BCS bowl candidate. PJ has a nice resume and if familiar with the college game.

BB is in bad spot not b/c of this year but b/c of last year. We had MUCH talent last year that did not perform and now we are losing patience. I think next will be the big year. If we can break through w/ some NCAA tourny action we should be ok.

Anyone who thought we were not going to lose some solid players/recruits b/c of a coaching change was naive.

The ugag question is interesting. I pose the scenario of if PJ has ACC success but no ugag success? Will the board become suicidal?

The fact is Ugag is recruiting VERY strong right now and are going to be a force, however I still think they have coaching weaknesses. (see USCe, Vandy, and Tenn game of last year)

I feel we may be getting into a situation similar to ugag is in w/ Florida. Florida beats ugag 9/10 of every decade but ugag keeps fighting for a win.

There is justification for optimism. The last time GT was an option-based team, the only thing needed to have been legit MNC contenders was just a nominal defense. Unfortunately, at that time, the most charitable description of the approach to D is benign neglect. If the new group understands the value of defensive play and recruits like they mean it, we should be able to give less-than-top-flight teams a really rough ride, and to be a serious threat to the top-flights.

You're not so sure that if we hadn't lost our two best players, including our point guard, that things would be different? And what programs are you talking about there? Losing talent like this will kill any program. Even Duke did no better than us last year. Apparently not even the mighty Coach K can compensate for a hole in the PG position.

You are rediculous. It is fans like you that keep the seats in the flats empty. Nobody wants to be around someone with a woe is me attitude. Stay home and do the crying. It isn't a great year, but I do see a bright future. I am still thrilled with the hire and I think that we will be back on top soon. We just have to suffer a little before we get there. Keep your head up, because we are going to come back in full force. And with basketball we lost 2 first rounders last year you do not just come back the next year and start winning.

First of all, I have to wonder what the purpose of this post was? Do you just like being depressed? So anyone who disagrees is looking through rose tinted glasses? Who decides that you're realistic versus anyone else with an opinion.

Let's face it. You evidently can't believe we lost to ugag 7 years in a row but didn't want a change? You see players decommitting but evidenttly don't know why and assume the program is falling apart. But if we've been getting bad results, why wouldn't you want the program to start over? You clearly think we've underperformed, so why would you want more of the same?

The last time GT was an option based team Pepper Rodgers was the coach. If you are referring to 98 and 99, you must not have watched GT very much. That team was option based the same way that LSU of 2007 was option based.

The best offenses at GT were under Ralph, and they ran a little of everything. A multiple offense is what you saw Monday with LSU.

Can we win with PJ's offense? We all have our own opinions. Time will tell.

A lot of people are excited because of PJ's resume, he has two major accomplishments:
Two NC with GSU and Completely turning around the Navy Program
In short, he is a winner and we are excited to see GT football if PJ continues on this trend.

I don't think you have to be pessimistic because of loss of athletes, most of the athletes being lost are because they won't fit well to PJ's system. There are things that look good as well, for example, MJ decided to stay for another year with defense and PJ set up a staff with extensive ties to the South which is good for recruiting.

Remember our last coach had a NC under his belt. With that said, I am not that excited with PJ's form of offense. I am however stoked about the mans ability to flat out win FB games.

Two NC as Head Coach at GSU. I think he has two more as OC while at GSU.

I think CPJ will be a good coach for us, if we are patient and give him time. However, the thing that worries me about his offense (and all option based offenses for that matter) is the risk associated with quarterback injury. I hope we have a lot of backups that are team players and don't mind holding a clipboard until their number is called. Oregon's season went down the tube when Dixon was injured. West Virginia didn't do well when Pat White was hurt last year. Florida lost to Georgia when Tebow was dinged up. There's a reason why no NFL offense runs the option. Do I think we can be successful in CPJ's offense? Yes, but it might take a few years.

While not feeling the pessimism that Guapo is elaborating --the start of the basketball season does have me a little down. The football and basketball programs are going through a time where things aren't bad --but theyr'e not particularly good either.

I tired of the 5-6 loss seasons that were the CG era --but I took small solace in the fact that the program never suffered a terrible stretch under his watch. I am excited about the upcoming PJ era --not too concerned about the decommits and transfers --just suit me up 85 football players next season and let's get after it.

The basketball team is a disappointment. It's not lost on me that losing TY and JC, particularly losing a PG after his freshmen season, would be felt this season. I'm just frustrated with some of the upper-classmen on this team because I just expected more by now. I'm really frustrated with lamenting over the same problems that I have seen this team have for going on three seasons now --poor shooting, lapses on defense, long stretches of going scoreless on offense (happens almost EVERY game) and just a lack of overall rhythm and a lingering funk that this team cannot seem to shake.

I remain optimistic that things will shape up as the season goes along. When I lose my optimism regarding GT athletics is probably the time when I have too much apathy to care --and through all the ups and downs that have come with following the Jackets over the last four decades I have never been apathetic.

I would call our basketball program 'undeniably, significantly down,' and out football program 'poised to succeed,' and wouldn't say either was in 'complete disarray.'

Our football team is NOT in disarray. how many teams can say that they have been to (how many bowl games in a row?) 8+ bowl games in a row

I dont think any of our programs are in disarray. I think they all need to be improved and all measures necessary will be taken to make that happen. We just tried to take football in another direction. Baseball is fine for now, were starting to regroup with talent and should be good this year. Basketball needs to become more consistent but Hewitt still has time to right the ship.

football-- all neg. news and no positives makes it seem as though things are down. although i am VERY optimistic.

basketball--the game last night looked like a high school game but as well as the JC and TY losses is the loss of Ra'Sean Dickey. we'd have been dumping the ball to him in a LOT of these games. we'd have clinch and morrow on the outside and dickey and peacock underneath. we'd be much much stronger.
