Not really running the Triple Option

Yeah good comparison to the VT game. In that game, he hit Stewart across the middle. Against UGa, he had the same opportunity, and didn't even try to hit him. Strange.
Hence the need for a 6'3" QB who can see the field. If we only had one of those on the squad.

/sarcasm now off

I haven’t seen it discussed much, but it is pretty obvious that CPJ is not able to run his offense with TM under center. As we’ve seen, he doesn’t make the reads correctly enough of the times to make it work.

A friend told me that Bedford said in the post-game that he thought that we ran the actual TO maybe 2 times all day. CPJ is simplifying the offense to fit TM’s abilities.

And as others have pointed out, the passing game was executed well by everyone but the QB it seems. Pass blocking was solid, TM had time to see the field, set his feet and throw. However, he doesn’t seem to be able to throw to a spot and let the WRs go get it. On the interception in the end zone, Stewart had beaten his man to the inside on a post, and if the ball is thrown early out ahead of him, it is a TD.

I posted this in a thread last week, but it fits well in this discussion. I actually thought TQM spread the ball around a little more yesterday than in previous games, but it didn't do much good. We have to have a legitimate threat with the outside running game as well as a legitimate threat in the passing game to be effective against the better defenses:

Average rushes per game (before this week):
QB: 23
BB: 22
A Backs: 10

Marshall and Benson are running it 45 times per game, but A Backs average only 2.5 each (among the main 4). 3-5 of those A-Back touches per game have to be the called toss sweep, so it's likely only 6 legitimate reads pitched to the A Backs per game.

TQM is an awesome runner. Great speed, tough as nails. He has a little swagger about him, and has a knack for that pylon. The problem is, he is not a great passer. His decision making is terrible, shown by his completion %. He usually doesn't throw ducks, but his throws are just off. Combine that with him not being great at reading the pitch, and it is obvious we need to see what Lucas and Jay can do. Give one of them the starting job, and let TQM return punts and kicks; the guy is electric in the open field.

I think we have run less and less TO on average every year now since Tevin. I don't think it has anything to do with TM. Defenses just seem to be more dialed into stopping it. BC completely shut down the TO last year.

Accurate passing is critical. The GT receivers just can't go get a ball that is lobbed up there. They don't have a talent advantage over the defending DB's in order to do that. They have to run the routes properly and the QB has to find the right receiver to throw to and then put the ball in the right spot. Marshall seems to struggle with both.

GT doesn't have to have a great completion percentage, but it has to be at least 50%. Otherwise the defense dares the QB to pass. When the defense can play 1-on-1 in the passing game, then they can do stuff like crash the A-gap with a LB, which is something the O-line has a lot of trouble with in some years. We saw defenses do exactly that a few years ago.

CPJ alluded to this in his post game if I interpreted his comments correctly. Will be an interesting off-season and Spring. I wonder what he has (will) tell the other QBs about off-season prep and potential?

He "spread" the ball around more - mostly on designed plays.
Lynch and Searcy both have devastating speed and were not given touches.

So if TQM isn’t great at QBing, and clearly has great speed and running skills, why is he under center? How do we not have someone else who could manage the game better?

Did Searcy even touch the ball all year? Of the games I watched and the comments I perused as I worked, I don't remember anyone saying his name or it being mentioned much at all.

Well, yea he touched the ball. But it was spotty and nothing that really leaps out for attention. We do need better aback blocking.

well the truth is that JT5 was not great with the triple option reads either, but he was a tremendous option passer so CPJ could work around it.

He completed 48% of his passes for his career, which is certainly better than this season's 38%, but still not great.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that JT5 could and did win games with his arm if needed. I think with the routes we run, close to 50% completion would be acceptable. We don't do a lot of curls or slants, it's mostly long passes. But I don't have the stats to back that up
