O line next year

I think 7 wins, but we will steadily improve throughout the year. But like Knoxjacket, I think it will be close.

Wins from this group 2.9: Duke, Jax St., G-W

Wins from this group 2.2: Miami, Miss St, FSU

Wins from this group 1.1: UVa, BC, UNC

Wins from this group 0.5: UGa, Clem, VT

Total wins 6.8 (so 6 or 7 wins). If I had to guess, they would be Duke, Jax, G-W, Miami, FSU, UNC, and Miss St. 4-4 ACC, 7-5 overall.

For CJ's first year I would take this as acceptable but under what he is possible of. I love the way tech fans figure up wins by tenths! I suspect PJ will make a run for the ACC title AT LEAST by next year. After the second game we will have a MUCH better idea as to what we should expect with the rest of the season. My prediction: If we keep away from the injury bug then I suspect we will still make it to the ACC champ game against clemscum.

I agree that that point might be aggressive. However, I think we'll take UNC and UVA. Everyone is hopping on the UNC bandwagon this year, and I'm not totally sure why just yet.

I'm not on the UNC bandwagon, as I think we are more likely to beat them than UVa. But we play @ UNC, which for some reason has been tough for us. Two years ago during our division title run, we only scored 7 up there. And that was because Choice carried the ball 12 out of the 13 downs.

Amen to that. They are getting a lot of love. Butch Davis was awesome at Miami...but that WAS Miami.

They were playing better by the end of the year...particularly after finding a QB...and really should have beat us. Of their last 4 ACC games they won two, lost to us by 2 pts and lost to NCState by 4 pts.

You are correct....they have a long way to go...but they have huge upside potential.

I think I speak for everyone when I say...
Shut the **** up.

BOR,
WOW,why do you berate Yukon so much?He has a right to his opinion and there is NOTHING wrong with his reasoning.I too think we will struggle next yr (possibly mightily) even though PJ will get it done eventually.

AlaGold, why do you care?

Miami is our 10th or 11th game. The offense will be working by then.

I am also confident that our O will be better than FSU at putting up points by mid-season.

I think a big reason for our spring game woes was that Nesbitt was out for 1.5 weeks.
In the short run, FSU and Miami will have the athletic ability to control our "still learning" offense.
You say Miami is late in the season. True. But with each game comes a higher probability of key injuries. Quality depth has always been a problem at Tech and I see this season as no different. But,hey, we have different predicitions. I'll stick with my 4 -5 wins. Everyone else can go on record, too. It is the fun of football. I am also on record as saying beating Georgia is not a pipe dream. I do feel Paul Johnson understands college players better than most. I get the impression that the season is being pointed at that one game. I think he has surmised that losing several other games will be more than offset if he can pull that off. It presents a rare motivational opportunity.

Forgot whose blog I was reading, so I apologize about not citing my reference, but someone was talking about how bad CPJ's first year at Navy was...how everything was doom until they beat Army at the end of the season.
So I am very prepared for a slow start. I am hoping for the best for the first year, but definitely am prepared for a very slow start.

More urban legend. Yes, Navy only won 2 games in CPJ's first year, but they only one 1 game the previous two years combined, including 0-for the year before he got there (one of which was the 70-7 loss to Tech). They were a better team in that first year than they had been in the previous 2, scoring over 100 points more than in either year. They suffered some blowouts but also had some close losses, including 30-23 against ND.

If we can figure out what we're doing on offense, we should do at least as well as last year.

NC,

I know it was better, but the article was not talking about urban legend--was even mentioning how horrible it was around CPJ's house. I wish I could find the link--was talking about how CPJ's daughter was on eggshells, etc.

Yea i read that. About how when he lost his daughter would cry and probably took the loses harder than anyone.

If you're talking about how hard he takes losses, I get that. My point was simply that Navy was better in that first year than they were before and I don't expect us to be worse because he knows how to get his system installed.

Our OL is going to be fine. With the change, everyone's on level turf. Gardner, Gilbert, Voss, AJ, Howard/Brown will most likely be the starters, and Yandell, Hill, Claytor, Folkner, Brannon, Uzzi, McRae and PSmith fighting for the 2-deep. It would be great to RS Uzzi, McRae and PSmith, but we may need them.
Does the spread option require more depth at offensive line? Is it more physically demanding on the offensive linemen? Will we see anything like platooning units to stay fresh? Or will we be able to have a set starting line and hopefully stay with those guys?

Well, I don't know PJ's system, so I can't answer most of those questions. Under Pepper, I never noticed us subbing all that much on OL, no more than any normal team did. I'd say a good 2-deep will meet our needs. We seem to have that, but we lose 3 of our apparent top 5 this year.

I had originally heard that we might rotate up to 10 players but CPJ lowered that to 7

stinger, I don't remember if it was true through his career at Tech, but one year while I was on the Technique staff (maybe 76?) we used two offensive lines. Pepper would run them in and out to wear down the defense.

Yes, I remembered that, too, as I was typing. May have been '76. I remember the buzz as he'd replace the whole O about every 3rd play. I think they changed the substitution rule or something, because that didn't last long... or maybe it was just one of Pepper's cute tricks.
