Offensive cut ups vs. UNC

The Verts route example is the most frustrating to watch it's blocked well enough and Graham has 2 options pretty open in that window if he would've seen them early and not forced the downfield pass. It's a young QB mistake which is very noticeable on tape and hope he puts that in the back of his head next time particularly against zone coverage.

A. The running back on the crossing was wide open and LB was 5 yards upfield and trailing big time and CBs had all their backs turned if that's completed he cuts it up toward the sideline and makes the First down easy and probably more.
B. The TE running the inside Post has a couple of steps on his defender and CBs backed turned following their WRs a good throw leading him is a completion another 1st down and 15-20 yard gain

True -the TD to go up 31-15 was one of them. They also picked up a couple of third downs where we brought good pressure, had good coverage, but the passes were completed. Once when Curry came with quick pressure -frustrating but it happens.

They converted several of those 3rd downs on comeback routes because we weren't getting any pressure. WR's were covered but Howell had time to move around guys came back to him. It's extremely hard to cover a guy and keep him covered for that long, especially when he's going back to the QB to help him out. Two of those plays I know were low balls that their receivers made excellent diving catches on. They converted a 3rd and about 7 I remember on a dime to the outside shoulder of a well covered receiver on the UNC sideline. If that ball isn't thrown perfect in that tight window, it gets knocked down or it's OB.

Another play I distinctly remember was their first TD was in the funky 4 receiver set to the right. David Curry was blitzing that play and he stepped way out like he was covering one of those guys. Juanyeh had responsibility there too but that still left a 3 on 4. That call has to be audibled out of, because either Curry has to protect the screen there and let his DB's cover the other 3, or if he's still gonna blitz then Campbell has to come over the top to help and let Tre play man on the opposite side with no help. Curry can't blitz from that far out, never make it to the QB in time. He basically took himself out of that play. He blitzed so Juanyeh bit on the screen fake because nobody was covering it. Then there was nobody over the top. It was a pretty good play call but we played the absolute wrong blitz against it.

This is one thing I've noticed about Graham and read the same from practice reports. He likes to throw the deep ball and forces too many. CDP has got to get him checking his progressions and make him learn that just because we're running 3 verts, doesn't mean this play has to be a deep ball. Very well could be a wide open check-down man that has room to run. Need to remind him that if he throws a 35 yard completion or a 6 yard completion with 29 YAC that it still counts as 35 on his passing total. :lol2:
 
This oline on talent is only going to be so good for us at the end of the day the more playing time they get and experience we are seeing some consistency but still not very good sometimes get completely blown off the line and Southers at RT is completely terrible if I see one more guy just run by him with him hardly able to do anything but slowly turn his upper body I might lose my mind. I realize unfortunately it's all we seemingly got for moment until some of the guys with talent continue their development and also filling in getting stronger and bigger

So we need to merge Graham with Johnson and would have the perfect balanced QB

For the people from Athens: Johnson seemed to only throw to the check down WRs and make the safe pass.

BTW, I think Graham will be fine; just needs a lot of refinement. I hope he is smart and studious enough to really improve in the off-season.

If he can get the passing game down, then I love that he is so athletic with the ability to make something when the play breaks down.

In his defense, a lot of the passing plays that he's hit are the concepts that we ran in our old offense. I remember seeing a lot of switch routes in the past, and he's had a lot of success with that. He's also hit a few simple curl routes for first downs. Then on vertical routes, he's throwing them downfield (rather than just over the top of LBs or in the seam). I think he would have been a MUCH better 3O QB than Marshall, if given the chance.

In the new offense, it's obvious he needs to work on short and intermediate routes (as do all our QBs). Hopefully by the end of the year we can add that element to our offense, because we've got to find a way to move the chains rather than relying on explosive plays.
