Offensive Line Injuries Status

Probably bad form to call out individual student-athletes....but I'm concerned about the potential to ever make an impact for the scholarship OL that remain BTL. With our current dire situation across the OL, we need these guys to step up and get themselves ready to play meaningful snaps. It's all hands on deck, fellas! Charlie Clark, Harrison Jump...let's get it! Also, I was pleased to see that Austin Smith made it ATL for Temple although I don't believe he actually was able to get in the game.

For those wondering, the combined list of offers for the BTL OL outside of Tech were Fordham, Marshall, Mercer, Samford, Army, FAU, Georgia Southern and Tulane.

I wonder (just as a curiosity) why the recruiting was so poor for OL. Was it that recruits didn't want to play in Option style blocking? Was it a staff choice, that they wanted option specialist? I hadn't looked at it in a few years so I didn't know.

Temple has mediocre recruiting but you could still see that their OL had bodies that were different than GT bodies. They are different type of players.

Combination of factors, like everything else in life. Sewak (and I believe Roof) were notorious for offering/taking reaches. But as to why we took so few OL on a year to year basis, that was with PJ. My assumption is he was pretty conservative on accounting for attrition, and just speculating but maybe he was walking on eggshells with the previous AD. And if it's a month or two to signing date and you no longer have any major targets interested in OL, you sign whatever skill positions look promising. I'd argue that any 3* or above player probably sees themself as atleast having a shot at making it to the NFl, and thus flat out not interested in GT.

Look at CGC coming in and ghosting the two OL that were committed to the 2019 class. So not only we were low on OL numbers committed, but then we ditched the 2 commits because they wouldn't likely contribute. It was a sign of things to come irregardless of who would be coaching the next 3-4 years.
 
CGC was willing to take a 1 year hit to avoid having bad fits on scholarship for 5 seasons. I applaud him for that. CPJ did the same thing at QB in year 1.
 
Kenny Cooper may be going on the shelf until next year. Remember he has not used a redshirt year. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's what I would do; the guy is a lion but is just too beat up to make any real difference out there.
 
The majority of our remainirng offensive linemen are freshmen and sophmores, a lot of them walk ons. Given their baptism by fire and the playing time that has been forced on them, is it realistic to expect a significant performance improvement over the remainder of the season?

If he is on board, I would redshirt him and save him until next year.

If he redshirts and then transfers, I will worry about the current staff.

CGC just said on the call in show that Kenny Cooper is out for the season.

He is done for the year and will be rs’d. Same with lee

Really? What if he doesn’t fit and wont play much more just a back up. Is told that. And decides to transfer. That doesn’t mean a problem as much as fit.

Now. I dont think that will happen. I am just giving an example of a reason he could leave for reasons not meaning problem. Just dont over read into individual player decisions if they happen

In the hypothetical of a guy transferring, that is true. But Cooper fits. He is good. And the current staff has said as much.

I guess I wouldn’t worry if he transferred down or to a terrible football team.

Are y’all just making shit up? There isn’t any indication of this mass of players unhappy with the new staff - in fact it seems quite the opposite if you see what the players post on Twitter. They seem extremely bought into the new staff and the relationships they have.

I haven’t heard of anything other than Braun transferring way back.

Cooper redshirting this year makes us stronger next year, because those true freshmen linemen are going to play like true freshmen.

Braun was going regardless of the coaching change. Wanted to study anthropology and play in a different system to boost his pro prospects.
 
Never seen GT have to use this many walk ons on the OL. The more banged up we get the more PArker Braun’s transfer stings.

I think we had a decent pocket early in the game. Not great, but a reasonable pocket. I think the routes are the problem.

Also, I’d like to see more cut blocking on our runs. It looks lke we are intentionally not cutting or our guys are hesitant because they are starting high.

Under PJ, position coaches didn't recruit solely for their position. Coaches recruited by geographical area. For instance, Roof had Gwinnett County and Lamar Owens had southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. McCollum had Cobb County and Tennessee, so he's the one who recruited Shaq Mason.
And a good number of offers were based on what the coaches saw at those camps they have in the summer. ID the kid and let his area recruiter recruit him.
I think PJ had the final say on scholarship offers. Listening to one of the current assistant coaches, I think they can extend offers to their liking.

We also lost some guys over the years who looked like they were going to be really, really good but got hurt - Chris Griffin and Morgan Bailey especially.
