Many things make more sense when you look at them from the viewpoint of poor coaching leading to inexcusable plays.

Yes, but that’s assuming it was going to bounce that way. It probably was but he was trying to ensure that it went out. The play he was trying to do is usually reserved for balls that roll dead near the sideline so yeah, it was a stretch to use it when he did.
