I am a faithful Catholic. Some of the reply posts on this thread are false regarding the Church and are quite offensive. I have heard of these calumnies before so it’s not shocking to me at all. Our Lord was right, if you follow Him you’re going to have to take up your cross and expect to be maligned in thought, word, and action. Being a minority in a predominantly Protestant or secular society poses great opportunities to faithfully live one’s Catholic faith. In my time at Tech in the 1970s, we were the largest Christian faith community on campus. I often heard at that time there were more Catholics on Georgia Tech’s football team than Norte Dame’s.
Regarding the fake Catholics at Notre Dame, it all started in the 1960s under the leadership of Father Hesburgh and continues to this day under Father Jenkins. The university has lost its real (faithful) Catholic identity. During Father Hesburgh’s time the emphasis went from the spiritual pursuit of higher education found in the teachings of the Church with the campus revolving around the magnificent church and the sacraments to revolving around the library with the mosaic of TD Jesus on the outside wall and secular humanist, non-Christian thought and values with the goal of being just another secular universit. Also during Fr. Hesburgh’s time, athletics was seen as a way to compete with the secular state universities or to best them. One can clearly see Notre Dame’s capitulation to the world with their promotion of woke fads that are contrary to the teachings of Christ and by the many secular individuals or “fake” Catholic politicians that they allow to speak on their campus or honor with honorary degrees.
I must admit that as a young Catholic teenager I entertained thoughts of going to Notre Dame. I am glad God spared me of that. I became a better, more faithful Catholic during my time at Georgia Tech. I discouraged my children and any others who are interested in Notre Dame from going there. Today there are much better Catholic colleges and universities to attend where one is not at risk to lose their soul.
