Third-Down Conversions a Priority for Tech
Head coach Paul Johnson hopes it does not become a pattern by Matt Winkeljohn
ATLANTA – Paul Johnson admits that Georgia Tech had problems on third downs for much of the game Thursday night at Clemson, but he's not yet ready to say the Yellow Jackets have a third-down problem.
The Jackets failed to convert on their first nine third-down attempts against the Tigers, as quarterback Josh Nesbitt did not connect on any of five passes in that span., but figured out what they were doing in time to convert three of their final five to keep back-to-back drives alive in order to tie and ultimately win.
So where to go from here? Get better at what you're doing on third downs? Do something different? Or something else?
"Sometimes you've got to give credit to the other side," the Tech coach said. "We had 420 yards (418, actually); it wasn't like we didn't move the ball. But there were some third down plays that we didn't do a very good job on. We dropped one, there were a couple of third-and-threes where we came off the ball late.
"If it becomes a consistent thing, then you've got to worry about it."
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who caught a 34-yard touchdown pass on fourth down from kicker Scott Blair in the first quarter, said there may have been some communications problems, too. Apparently, the play sent in from Johnson didn't always make it to the line of scrimmage.
"Sometimes we'd get the wrong play. A couple times we misunderstood the play calling," he said. "It wasn't the crowd noise. Maybe sometimes the play comes in wrong. One play, we ran the wrong routes."
Whatever the case, the biggest plays of the Jackets' rally came on third downs, as Nesbitt connected with A-back Anthony Allen for 24 yards to convert a third down in the fourth quarter after Clemson took a 27-24 lead. Nesbitt rushed for a first down on third-and-1 moments later, helping set up Blair's game-tying field goal.
Nesbitt also hit Thomas for 39 yards on third down on the Jackets' next possession to keep alive what ended up being the winning drive.
The quarterback, though, was not happy after practice Saturday.
"We only scored one [touchdown] as an offensive unit, and that was on the second play of the game. That's not acceptable," Nesbitt said. "We can't accept that, and I put it on my back. I'm going to work harder, and push my teammates to be the best they can. I had a bad game. I knock the dust off my shoulders and keep working.
"You look at the film and say, ‘If I play the way I did in the last game, Miami is going to beat us.' I can't allow that. I've got to be on top of my game, be on my A game."
Nesbitt, who completed three of 14 passes with two interceptions, may be getting some extra work in the passing game.
"After that game, me and Josh are going to start working out after practice on routes," Thomas said. "We do a lot of option stuff in practice, and he d oesn't throw much so I'm going to try to get with him after every practice so he can get a chance to throw more."
