Talked to my buddy last night. Clemson by far was the most athletic Dline they will see this year. He gave me some insight on one major problem the line is having. They are overstriding on their first couple of steps which in turn gets them off balance and unable to finish block to the lB. They continue to work every week to correct it but habits especially this one is hard to break. One lineman graded 30% against CU which was his highest of the year. Clearly they have a ways too go but I at least know they care and are working hard everyday.

He also over heard some of the lineman saying that if the previous regime was here they at best would be 3-4 and maybe 2-5.

I was glad to see A.J. Smith overcome the Frosh. last week on the depth chart to become a starter...He would give us 3 Red Shirt Seniors as starters. I know pre-season P.J. said A.J. had the best intial burst of any of the lineman. I know someone mentioned he had a tough day against Clemson but, I think with him only back healthy for one week that he may shake off the rust and provide a big boost over the next tough 5 game stretch.

Your thoughts on this Big John ?

Obviously the more you play the more comfortable you get. I like the fact that it's a competition in practice everyday to see who gets the reward on Saturday. It's been a while since we have had that.

On this note, we stayed in Anderson, SC at one of the guys friend's house and that friend just happens to be dating previous o-line coach Joe D'Alessandris's daughter.

My guess is Voss. He's having a tough time but hopefully he can turn things around the second half of the season. He's a capable guy he just needs to get it done.

I noticed alot of this... and alot of diving right at the snap. I know if you want to cut the D-line you have to get to his legs before he can get to you, but it looks like they are expecting it, waiting on our O-line to dive at them, then just kind of jumping over. Is this some of the "overstriding" they mention? Just wondering.

Interesting.

Also good to hear that they think Clemson has the most athletic D line we'll face. I recall preseason, the three that were supposed to be the best were BC, VT, and UGA.

If Clemson's D line is better than UGAs, then I feel a little better about our chances for the rest of the season.

Ditto... I was gonna mention that in my post, but didn't want to single anybody out. I think he has the ability and mindset to do it, but he's just having a hard time adjusting. I've seen alot of LB's go right by him untouched in the last couple games. May not be his assignment, but I've noticed it near him. Great guy though, and he seems like the guy that doesn't quit and wants to be out there.

I have to think that hiking the ball and then getting a cut block off with those wide splits is really hard.

Maybe we need some more signs in the stands with fake moustaches attached, to give him some encouragement.

Excellent.

Agreed by far!!!

Also on the OL, my guess is the person who flops on their belly after the snap every play. No names, but it is difficult to watch. Overstriding and diving is not good technique. I guess you are right, old habits don't die easily.

Hey JD,
I appreciate your post to the degree I will be a lot less critical of the OL. Hats off to them for striving to get better each day.
Good post JD and keep'm coming.

We hear this after every game we play. After we beat BC everyone said "we won't face a better DL all season", but when we lost to VT it was "their DL is the most athletic defensive line we'll play this year"...hell we even heard it about MSU's and Duke's line.

Either every team on our schedule has an amazing DL, or people are exaggerating to take some of the blame off our offensive line. I tend to believe the latter.

Actually the Oline has a meeting session before films and they talk with the coaches about their thoughts on the game and who they played against. THE PLAYERS THAT PLAYED, all said Clemson was by far the most ATHLETIC DLINE they have played all year.

As for the overstriding issue, as a lineman you want to take short controlled steps with a burst to maintain balance and get to the LB's. Overstriding (try taking a large step and have some one push you ) and see how much balance you have.

Our 6-1 record is basically equivalent to a one-point lead early in the third quarter against a "team" that will play much better in the 2nd half then they did in the first half.

We will have to work even harder over the next 5 games then we have thus far just to hang onto that "lead."

Our three toughest opponents so far have been BC, VT and Clemson. Each of our next five opponents is at least as tough as the weakest of those three.

Not so fast my friend.

I agree with the gist of the post but I doubt if many would agree that UVA and Miami are better than Clemson. On top of that we have UVA/Miami at home versus Clemson in Death Valley.

Of course we only barely beat Clemson.

I would agree with it. Clemson is terrible. I don't know what effect rallying around Dabo had, and we did have to play in Death Valley which has a great home field advantage, but as a team I would say UVA and Miami are both better than Clemson.
