A couple of "gentleman" were sitting at a table near the register and as I was waiting in line they started talking about - I heard a couple of key words ("Richt", "Georgia") and decided to listen in. They first started talking about what Richt needed to do to turn things around which led to "Auburn and Kentucky don't mean s**t, we HAVE GOT to beat Tech". Nothing earthshattering, but it's great to hear that their season depends on beating us after so many seasons of the reverse.

If Richt loses to us and UF for the 2nd straight season his seat will be on fire.

they really never cared about beating Tech before last year. It was all Florida, and one loss still isn't going to make them angry. I know a lot of people who were shouting "the rivalry is back" after last year, but it's not. Not until we get UGA hating us as well. I say after we beat the dawgs 5/6 years (hopefully 6/6), THEN we can say its back.

This year, they're wanting a win bad. Imagine how much they'll want it after twenty more straight losses...

College FB rivalries are always "what have you done for me lately."

Back in the mid to late 90's - Tennessee owned Bama (won 6 or 7 in a row) and UGA but had a long losing streak to Florida. Tennessee's primary rival was UF. Ask a Bama or UGA fan who their main rival was at the time and many would say it's Tennessee. UGA fans would also say Florida (not Tech). But Florida would say Florida State was their main rival (not UGA) as Bowden & Company took care of business against the Gators most years.

it goes in cycles....

5 out of 6 wins against UGA will be a complete miracle. We haven't had a stretch that good against them since the 50's.

If we can beat UGA 50% of the time moving forward.... that will be great success for GT football. Bobby Dodd was once quoted as saying winning 1 out of 3 against Georgie was doing well in that rivalry. I tend to agree as they simply have so many advantages over us, off the field.

The one thing we need to do for sure is make BDS the most intimidating 55K stadium to play in the land. We need more GT fans using their seats all season long including the UGA game instead of selling them for a fast buck.

We must "protect this house" whoever comes calling to Atlanta including the Community College boys from Athens. Too many times over the last 20 years, UGA has walked into our house and snuck away with a win. 1991, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007..... Hopefully 2009 won't be a repeat of this.

Respectfully, Bobby Dodd's analysis of our program after his retirement as HC does not apply to our situation today.

He was a great football coach. But had Homer Rice not come in, we would have been headed to DI-AA. Not so today. Today, we are in a good, but far from great, conference. Georgia is one of the best states for recruiting. And Atlanta is a huge attraction. Academic support is better. A lot of things are in our favor now, although many challenges remain. Remember, in 1985 Dodd encouraged Curry to take the Bama job. I don't think Alabama could sway a Tech alum today, like it did Curry then.

I think a reasonable expectation is somewhere between 40-60% winning percentage against Georgie. But we are capable of doing more, given the right coaching staff. I think we have that coaching staff, and it wouldn't surprise me to see us win 2 out of 3, maybe more. But then again, my expectations have been avg 9 to 9.5 reg season wins (out of 12 games), win ACC about every 5 years, beat U[sic]GA 50% of the time. That's after discounting year one, unless favorable, for any coach. Paul Johnson is going to blow those expectations away.

5 of 6 against the dawgs is very realistic right now. That program is sinking fast. We should win this year. Richt has, at most, one calender year to turn his team around. Which isn't looking like they'll make any real improvement. UGA hires a new coach, and God only knows how that will work out. We know Arkansas is loving the move...

You are way too optimistic.

The last two times we have had any shortlived success against Georgia, UGA has hired a coach that has owned GT.

The lows at Georgia (coaching change, instability in the program) are NOWHERE as low as they are at Georgia Tech because they have more advantages then we do.

F**K THAT! 2/3 is an accomplishment.

3 in a row seems like the most probable outcome. After that who knows? Will Martinez be around? Will even Richt be around? If Richt sticks around and UGA hires a great defensive coordinator the 2011 mutts should be a force to be reckoned with, especially with a redshirt sophomore Murray/Metinzeheimerburger at QB with a year of experience under his belt, and right after we lose our current Juniors to graduation.

I think PJ goes 3/4 against the mutts.

If we average 2/3 for the next 60 years I might live to see the record move in Tech's favor. I could die a happy man.

we need to literally win 10 straight games against ugag to make this rivalry equal. They are winning the series by 19 games I think. That's 19 years!!!

My prediction: PJ stays with Tech for 20 years, and we win 15/20 of those games.

And 15 MNC's.

Yeah, but who are they going to hire who will 'own' a CPJ coached team?
No, assuming CPJ stays around for a good while, I wouldn't be surprised to see the series to take a dramatic turn in our favor, while the Mutts hire various coaches every few years to try in vain to regain their dominance.

OK someone needs to step back from the coolaid...

PJ at the most will only win 14 MNC's in the next 20 years.

:D

That's a myth. They just say that to get Tech fans all riled up. If the Tech game doesn't mean anything, then why is it basis for firing? If Richt had lost as many to us as he had to Florida, he'd be gone.

If our game with them isn't a rivalry, why do their fans buy SEASON TICKETS to Tech just to get a ticket to the game? In fact, more people buy our season tickets when UGA is supposed to be really good.....I wonder why that is?

The whole Florida is Georgie's biggest rival thing is a myth.

From 1990-2009, the mutts beat UF 3 times. UF has won 3 national championships in that time. The mutts, 0.

From 1990-2009, the we've beat them 5 out of 19, and likely 6 out of 20 after this year's game. We've won one national championship in that time, the mutts, 0.

If its a question of which is a more competitive rivalry, the answer is simple. For each loss to Georgie, UF has a national championship. And they may have an additional one this year.

Even CPJ himself admits that "physical superiority cancels all theories" or WTTE.

Because they are loyal, hardcore fans and it's cheaper to buy GT season tickets (To see UGA play one game in Atlanta every other year) then it is to buy UGA season tickets?

If we win 3 in a row again versus UGA, there will be massive applecart turnover on the Georgia football coaching staff. Richt's hot seat would be "Close to the Sun" warm.

And if that did happen, UGA has the resources ($$$) to attract virtually any top coach (head or assistant) they want. Unlike GT. Do in part because Georgia has more loyal fans then GT does.

P.S. Martinez isn't likely to finish this year, not to count next season. Expect a change there this offseason.

Even CPJ himself admits that "physical superiority cancels all theories" or WTTE.

And this may be the case, but as time goes on there will be a much narrower talent gap (if any) as CPJ continues to recruit very well in the state of Georgia as the Jackets have continued success (particuarly has the players get even better at running the offense). And between Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Paul Johson (and maybe throw Lane Kiffin in there), UGA's dominance in instate recruiting should continue to significantly weaken.

Weren't you one of the guys harping about our inferiority complex in regards to UGA?

As for having money to afford any coach you want, that doesn't mean you'll get a great coach. UT and Arkansas have gobs of money. They spent that money and I don't consider either Petrino or Kiffin good coaches. I'm sure plenty of Navy fans were worried about beating Army seven years ago too.

I don't care if UGA allows prison inmates to spend their parole at Sanford. I don't care how low they lower their already below-sea-level admission standards for a kid that runs a sub 4.4 40 yarder. We have a coach. An honest-to-God winner. A guy that will not accept losing. I always want to beat Georgia. I hate them, with a pure, blinding hatred that rivals the heat of a thousand sons. And I expect my team to beat them every single year. Not every other year. Not two out of three. We're a better school, we get a better class of people on the field, and we're a better team. Period.

Win.

My expectations are for GT to beat UGA every year. If GT loses to UGA it is automatically a bad year.

But I know it won't happen every single year.

I still expect it.
