Patrick Nix Gone (ESPN Link)

Now I actually want Gailey to stay. The only reason I ever wanted Gailey to leave was so Nix wouldn't come back.

Honestly, Im a little shocked. He may well be great one day, but at the moment I don't feel like Nix has showed anything that would justify this kind of promotion. But wish him well, and hopefully we'll have a good OC brought in by Gailey or whoever is on the sidelines next fall.

Nix leaving could be an indication that Gailey is gone as well.

i think we'll be sorry that Nix is gone, especially to a team in our divison. Nix is a very good OC IMO, but seriously, how much can you do with Ball as your QB? Our offense was popping when Ball had his wheels, but after that Maryland game ...

I really think Nix and Chan went at it with one another over that QB issue. Chan was going to play Ball, period. Nix probably wanted to atleast give Bennett a shot, maybe even for one play to give the offense a spark, especially in the wake or ugag games. That may have been the final straw for Nix. Guys were setting records left and right when Nix had Bennett to work with.

I really fear this one is going to bite us in the arse very hard.

I hope so, cause if the rumors are true, that'd mean Fisher would be coming in. LSU's offense seemed to run pretty well.

That's exactly my thoughts. I would have been similarly surprised if Miami picked a guy who had only been OC (with playcalling duties) for one year at any university, with no BCS experience before that.

Randy Shannon is also a defensive guy through and through, so he's probably going to give Nix complete control.

Best of luck to him. He'll at the very least have plenty of talent to work with down there.

I have to respectfully disagree. Better play-calling would have won us the Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and West Virginia games, IMHO. And, I think it could have won us the Georgia game. I felt like Nix was always too prepared to jump away from the run game when it was working. That would have been ok, but then he didn't stay with the quick outs that got us all the way down the field.

But, it works both ways. Playcalling may have won us a couple of close games, too (Miami, Maryland, etc.). But, overall, I feel like we can do much better than Nix. I wish him the best of luck in the future (as long as he's not playing us, of course!).

I don't know what to make of this whole situation, as I find it surprising, but I did get a kick out of the article.

"He is a former standout quarterback at Auburn, where as a sophomore in 1993, he helped lead the school to an 11-0 record."

Right.....He held a clipboard while 4th year starter Stan White played 10 1/2 games until getting hurt in the Iron Bowl. He did have a huge second half, but the article implies he was the starting qb all season.

If I were a Miami fan, I would think that this was a curious hire.

He personally blamed himself for the ND loss. He said, almost verbatim, after the ND game that he "passed when it didn't make sense."

Experienced OCs know to keep pounding it even when the other defense stops it on a couple of series. People who play on the playstation think they have to pass it after a run up the middle for 1 yard.

(I think Nix is still helluva lot better than the Tecmo Bowl champions out there, but I still think that described his main problem last year.)

I think that is the sentiment down here, everyone though Dirk Koeter was tehir guy especially after he got together with Randy Shannon, he even went up to watch their bowl game in Boise.

if I had to speculate I would think Tenuta may become the HC and they want to use his salary to bring in a OC w/ more experience.

I actually heard BOR has already been offered the HC position if Gailey leaves. No word on who he's bring in as OC.

This whole situation keeps turning in unexpected directions....I guess we'll have to totally redesign our entire offensive schemes/play books since Nix leaves & goes to another ACC team w/in our conference w/ that same knowledge....This is going to be interesting. Breaking in a new QB w/ new OC & possibily a new HC....And w/ CJ going pro.... Bet lots of players/recruits are scratching their heads..."wondering what in the world" to put it politely...

SO who will be our top canidates for OC: (who is available).....Thank God Threet is already enrolled & hope we can hang onto Nesbitt.

Would they promote Giff Smith to OC???

what about our RB : Dwyer & Jones (they going to remain solid, not knowing what type offensive system they're walking into?)

Man, it's going to be a heck of a couple weeks once it all shakes loose! Thank God it's Friday!

I want Chan to stay, provided he doesn't takeover the playcalling duties again.

I don't think they had much of a choice. Word is Shannon interviewed 15 candidates and all of them told him to go jump off a bridge.
