Paul Johnson....

Something mentioned here I\'ve been curious about

That is the question of whether the Paul Johnson/Ga Southern option offense would work in major college football. I've watched Ga Southern a good bit through the years and it has always amazed me how succssful they are with that offense. Now apparently Navy is having the same success. It looks to have only a handful of plays, but if you have the qb and running backs to run it and you practic it enough, other teams have a terrible time stopping it. At the beginning of the year UGA beat Ga Southern fairly easily but they didn't stop Ga Southern from running up a zillion first downs and yards rushing, and Southern kept the ball most of the first half, IIRC. They did this with linemen who are considerably smaller than major college linemen. I don't know who Navy will play in their bowl game, but I'll be interested in seeing how they fare.

Re: Terrible idea....

We have a tough enough time recruiting running the pro-style offense. Why don't we go to the gimmick triple option offense so we can run of ALL potential offense recruits (Esp. QB, WR, and OL) with dreams of playing in the NFL?

Paul Johnson is ten times better than Chan Gailey.

Hmmm - Nice analysis. Let me get back to you after I've had time to digest it.

Re: Terrible idea....

Until he plays against the big boys............

11 opponents 46-76
two of those opponents were 1-AA
One team they played against had winning record Delaware 8-3 and had a hard time with them.

avg. power ranking of the 9 DIVISION 1 TEAMS 88.8

Now I am not dogging Paul because he had success at GS but come on if you think we are going to get high caliber players to play in this system who have pro aspirations I want what you are smoking. This system is goo d for Nany because very few and I mean very few move on to the next level.

Thanks for a coherent answer, \'Fridge Mover

I was not coming out for or against the option offense for Tech, I was merely stating I've been curious as whether it would work at the major college level. You've provided some perspective on the actual question.

Re: Thanks for a coherent answer, \'Fridge Mover

I know you weren't Clito, I just thought i would throw this in there. I think some schools it would work. Problem again is if you have pro aspirations a SA is not going to go.

How different is Navy\'s O and Wake\'s?

I don't think it would work here.

Re: Something mentioned here I\'ve been curious abo

Nebraska won several MNC's in the mid-90's running an option offense. It can certainly be done.

They always had excellent OL and RB, and everything clicked in that era with some good option QB's as well (Tommie Frazier for one).

I think it would be tough to recruit players into that system, as others have stated. It was kind of a tradition at Nebraska so it didn't hurt their ability to get OL and RB as much as it would some teams (us, for instance).

They did have a tougher time getting QB and of course receivers. In fact, Little Joe was heavily recruited by Nebraska.

Re: Something mentioned here I\'ve been curious abo

I think the more remarkable thing about Paul Johnson is how he took essentially the same people at Navy and turned them from losers into winners. Connecting with people, motivation, discipline, attention to detail, elimination of mistakes... somehow he got those elements working for him.

Who's to say he would stick with the same offense if he had access to the type athletes you find in the ACC?

Re: Something mentioned here I\'ve been curious abo

how many MNC's did nebraska win in the 90's? My apologies, they won 3.

Re: Terrible idea....

Tressel at Ohio State came on board after going through the big names.

Hindsight being 20/20 I'll bet Braine and the search committee would rather have Bobby Lamb, the Montana coach or any number of guys who have proven themselves at a "lower level".

GA Southern had athletes way

beyond the competition and he still ran the option.
