PJ's O catching on with VT fans

http://www.techsideline.com/news_archive/showArticle-3934.php

I like that preview a lot. It didn't come off as too terribly biased to me, as they acknowledged their own shortcomings openly, and gave our defense a lot of credit. They also included some offensive stats that surprised me. Apparently, all of our success has come off of big plays. They break it down in the article, so check that out.

That was an outstanding preview. That guy knows his stuff.

Excellent article in the link provided by GTsax. Those guys seem to know more about the GT team than most of our fans.

Something from the preview:

All year Bud Foster prepares his players to attack the football, but this week, and this week only, he must teach assignment football. That's a tough transition to make.

That makes me even more optimistic. Hopefully the 3O will work better against VT than BC.

They're confusing me on that site because they refer to their school as "Tech" too.

Unfortunately VT has performed well IIUC against the teams (like Wake) that also a believed to require assignment football. Our main pro here is they lost a lot of the D players so that trend may not continue.

Gimmick schmimick

But, at the risk of inadvertently sucking up to any ex-OL on the board, I will say neither this offense nor any other will work unless the OL does its job.

As a corollary to that assertion, just about ANY offense CAN work if the OL does its job well.

Heroics at the "skill" positions can only take you so far.

It can't be much of a gimmick when it is built on principles I saw executed in the NCAA in grade school.

It will work. Other people will copy it. Defenses will practice against it more, and then it will work less.

The secret to success is to do something the rest of the league isn't doing.

Many have noted that this incarnation of the TO is different than the one we saw at Navy. Perhaps that is to cover up weakness in our execution, but I like to think it is also adapting the offense to the exploit the strengths of the personnel we have available.

I think after this year the fears of recruits seeking a path to the NFL will be calmed when they see the attention our top players get.

P.S.

I was trying to keep an even keel and be cautious about the season, but now I am getting wound up.

Me too. I've been patiently holding back any taunting of Hokies at work this week. But if we win Saturday (and I think we will), I will be totally excited about the potential for this season.

He says that they win 16 - 13, but I don't think they have a chance. They have outstanding athletes out there, but they underachieve. I think our D shuts them down and a few big plays win the game for us.

:+1: Hammer meets Nail!

Not that it is the same O as PJ's, but that is why it might help us if Grobe would get a promotion.

As far as Georgie's opponents, wouldn't Fla's scheme have to be considered to be closest to ours?

"The Hokies have to be disciplined, and stay on their feet. All it takes is one quick Georgia Tech chop block, and Josh Nesbitt or Jonathan Dwyer will have a running lane."

One quick chop block and the officials will move us back 15 yds. Chop block is not synonymous with cut block - a guy that "knows his stuff" should be able to make this distinction.

my exact thoughts when i read that. i actually p'd me off a bit, b/c it feeds the ignorance about the difference

Even when we "crushed" them in 2006 we only won by 11. Don't get ahead of yourself...

New team, new offense, and most importantly, new coach.

We went up 21-0 in the first quarter and then played prevent the entire rest of the game. That is the only reason they had as many points as they did.

Florida runs some 2 TE formations, that I guess you could construe as being somewhat like ours if you consider the TE like a slotback, except the TE isn't going to run the ball and they don't really have a B-back or tail back.

I haven't seen much of Auburn's new "spread eagle" and Tenn's new O was definately not the same from what I saw at UCLA, but of all the people uga faces, Florida is the closest to us I would guess, but it would still be a different style of D since they would not have to account for the A-backs in Florida's O.
