POLL: Most Important Game on 2002 Schedule

I think the link between beating Clemson and UGa is a coincidence. Besides, there have been years where we've beaten Clemson and lost to UGa (92 and 97 spring to mind).

The reason UGA is more important?:
1) State Rival - That makes them our biggest, most-hated rival, emotion, etc. Also, if we win the conference and lose to UGA, to me that really makes the conference championship feel so much more meaningless, in spite of the BCS ramifications.

2) Recruiting - if you can't beat your rival in-stae, your recruiting will suffer immensely and you can't replenish your talent

3) It's the last game (except for bowls) and you hate to lose your last game. It sends you into the off-season with a bad taste in your mouth.

So, IMO, not only is UGA our biggest rival, but also our most important game.

Vandy!!!

Our mind set should be on Vandy. Getting off to a good start is going to be important for us to be successful especially with a new coaching staff. As we saw just last year the team's chemistry is extremely important. The next game is always the biggest. I don't care if we are playing Furman (I can remember them ruining our homecoming). Look ahead and you're going to be beat. We're not here to get beat. We're here to WIN!

One game at a time.

Thanks for the last two posts. I kept wondering to myself how important the Clemson, F$U, and Ugag games would be if we were to look past the opener to one of them instead. If we don't take care of business in the first one, the rest of them will lose luster, period.

In my book, Big Bee said it right on this topic - 12 one game seasons, each one important in its own time.

GO JACKETS!!

I'm not disagreeing that Vandy is important. Every game is important. It is the job of the coaches and players to treat every game as a season unto itself. It is our job to show up and cheer. But I think there's nothing wrong with us fans looking at a whole season in advance and pointing at certain games as the most important. For me, and many other Techies, it's UGA.

At this particular time, the Clemson game appears to be the crux of the season.

For me, I say that the game I want to win the most is the FSU game. I mean, come on, the last time we beat FSU was in 1955, the year my mother was born. We need to win that one first and foremost.

As far as what bowl we appear in, the Clemson game will be the most important.

As far as the rivalry goes, UGAg is not going to be as good a team as is expected and we will pull out a win.

ok, fellas, try this out:
We lose to Vandy, then beat Clemson.

How nuts are the leghumpers going to get if THAT scenario happens?

We gotta beat Vandy.

OK Belly,
What if we beat Vandy and lose to UGA? UGA is more important.

None of that matters. Beating UGA solves that situation.

Bumper stickers say, "I'd rather go 1-11 and beat UGA than go 11-1 and lose to them."

If you have any doubts as to which is the most important win every year, look at the Tech/UGA AJC vent. It's all anyone talks about all year.

boys, we're not discussing who it is most emotionally satisfying to beat. For me, that's ugag, fsu, and Clem. We're talking about what, at this point, is the most important game of the season. I don't want a program that is not committed to each game, as it comes, and whose goal is to kick all butts, one at a time.

A program like that will win its share-or more-of rivalry games, and will win its share of big conference games. I'm not going to be satisfied with , "Yeah, but we beat them dogs,"
which to me is the cry of a losing program.

Munson loved to say, before GOL started beating their butts, that the Tech/ georgia game just wasn't what it used to be when they were in the same conference. I hated (football hate, of course) him for saying that, because it communicated that Tech was not a problem, and it didn't matter that much to doggies to get up for the game. Like we felt in the 50's.

I want a program where we focus on fsu and beat uga as a matter of course. I think that's probably what CG wants. To get there we build a program that methodically whips the opponent, starting with the next one.

Well, that's my rant.

Not a huge disagreement here. I think you're looking at it from the standpoint of a politically correct coach. The coach always focuses on the next game, as well he should. The rest of us (well, not all of us, but most of us) are looking at it from a fan's perspective. Beating Vandy is nice and good and necessary, but it's not as important as winning our conference or beating UGA. Not from an emotional standpoint or an achievement standpoint with respect to bowls, etc. Another way to look at it...if we lose to Vandy and go undefeated in the ACC, then we go to the BCS (yes, we will be made fun of)...if we beat Vandy and wind up 2nd in the ACC, we don't go to the BCS.

So, I say...Beat Vandy. Kill Vandy. Don't give the Dawgs more ammo in their constant slam of ACC football. I hope CG has 'em ready for that game. But, better yet, as a fan, beat UGA and win the ACC.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Although I would agree with the importance of the UGA game each year from a local standpoint, going 11 - 1 is far more important to the long-term success of the GT football program. If we were 11 - 1 with our only loss to UGA, we would be ACC champs and in the Sugar or Orange Bowl guaranteed. We would have also beaten Clemson and FSU in the regular season.

That being said, to hell with Georgia!

Ok, my two cents. First and foremost. Beat Vandy. Beat them soundly. Beat them convincingly. The beat Clemson. Then beat FSU and then beat UGA. They are ALL important games as we take each one game season as it comes, but Clemson is the first big conference game and the first big rival game we play this year and like last year will do wonders for the team's overall confidence level. I have no doubt that we'll be up for that one if for no other reason than to show the GT doubters what might have been last year and what we're made of this year.

First of all though, we had BETTER be up for the challenge of beating Vandy because we KNOW they'll be up for us! A win there sets the table for the next game and the next, but wins over Vandy, Clemson, FSU, and Ugag will set the table for respectability for GT football since those idiot dog fans STILL think we're a pushover and not worthy of their precious SEC peers.

Okay, you have done it now! I had just matter-of-factly chosen Clemson as the most important game at this particular time. Now, you will have to read a discourse on why!

Logically, we beat Vanderbilt. The game is here in Atlanta. We still have the upper hand in confidence, because we have beaten them so many times in the past.

They have a new coach and we have a new coach, however, we have the advantage in player personnel, especially on defense. Defense is the key in early games.

Next, we should have little trouble with Connecticut, even though it is on the road.

Clemson will be on the road, the first ACC game of the year, and the first game we are in a good position to be beaten. We still have a little better talent than Clemson, but they have improved in the past couple of years at the skilled position.

We have a new quarterback and they have a new quarterback, so the QB position should be a wash. The main problem playing Clemson is the game being in their back yard with a new Tech QB playing his first ACC game on the road to a tough opponent.

If we lose this game, our confidence factor drops. If we win this game, the confidence factor will be sky high with a 3-0 start and we play BYU in Atlanta next. If we lose to Clemsom, BYU becomes a tougher game. If we beat Clemson, we beat BYU also.

With a 4-0 start, we have a solid chance of beating both FSU and UGA. Therefore, Clemson is still my pick as the most important game at this particular time.

If Tech looks past Vandy then this may be the end of the season from a moral standpoint

Obviously, the next game is always most important at any given moment, just like Big Bee always said. But as far as year round bragging rights, etc., the ugag would be most important and FSU a close second (particularly since we need to end their streak so badly).

I think it's Clemson and here's why-
It sets the tone for how the season will go.
UC win- Tech will finish with no more than 7 wins
Tech win- easily 8 or 9 wins

yes FSU and UGA are important but momentum wise, if come into these games with quite a few loses, we don't stand a chance.

GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Each 'next' game is most important before and during the season; but after the season would you rather brag about beating Vandy or beating Ugag or Fsu?

I find all the Clemson talk interesting. I guess it is primarily because the game is early. If we played Clemson in November this year, I would hope that Clemson would not be the choice of "most important" game. I agree that if lose to these guys this year, it probably would be a good indicator for the rest of the season. However, I do not think a win means as much. Same holds true for the Vandy game and many others.

The 1992 Clemson game is shaping up much like this one in my opinion. We had a new coach and it was early in the year at BDS@HGF. We won, and many thought it was a statement type game. Turned out Clemson was wretched in 1992 and meant little. Clemson may turn out to be good this year and win 10, but I doubt it.

As far as indicator games for season go, UNC and Clemson are big if we lose.
