Post SC State Game Discussion 9.9.2023

I miss what key was fired up about on the sidelines what happened??

He lost it after the SC State touchdown but I think he was mad at the OL from the previous drive.
Correct (from watching on TV). I forgot who but somebody made a pretty big mistake.

I wish we had BGSU next week. Our OL could use another week to gel. I think we figured something out around drive 3 and started actually forming a pocket. We were very getting good push from the start, but needed to do better about opening holes and keeping the defense from collapsing down on the run. Excited that we might have found the right 5.

On defense, I'm sorry, but wtf are we doing? Our DL doesn't seem to even TRY to get off blocks and wtf were our DEs doing sliding down the line rather than getting up field when the OL slid away from them. I genuinely don't understand what they were seeing on some of these plays. Just have a modicum of ball awareness and we had some free shots on the QB.

Great to see us put together a nice win, even though it was against a doormat. Waffle House would’ve had more problems today. Enjoying the improvement.

Always great to win. Just don’t see this D having any significant difference makers.

I’m hoping my original prediction of 5 wins can happen. Our O will need to score some points for sure against teams with decent O.

It is ALWAYS good to get a win no matter who the opponent may be. Our offensive line performed better today. They opened big holes for our running backs and gave our QB plenty time to complete his passes. However, earlier in the game SC ST was getting pressure on young Mr. King. Fortunately, Coach Key made some adjustments on the OL, which worked. Even though this win was against an overmatched opponent it still gives our young men confidence they badly need!

As for our defense, that is a MAJOR concern moving forward. I was so glad Coach Key became angry after Tech gave up SC ST first touchdown. They did it by passing down the field with ease. We couldn't get any pass rush until later in the second half. And this being against an overmatched foe. That's inexcusable! And sadly we had missed tackles again like last week. Thank goodness our defense had some nice stops in the 4th quarter. Hopefully, young Mr. Kelly will recover as soon as possible from his injury.

Good win today! Maybe we can improve on defense for Ole Missy next week. At least, we have a better chance this year in giving them a game than what we showed last year. I was glad Tulane made Ole Missy have to sweat a good bit in the first half.

GO JACKETS!

Both LOS’s are going to be an issue next week and against quality ACC teams.

OL does not open up holes up the middle.
DL gets very little pass rush.
WR blocking on the quick bubble screens was bad against UofL and wasn’t much better today.

Injuries to Lane and Haynes are also concerning. To me Haynes has already established himself as the lead RB.

I thought there was progress from week 1 to week 2. For us to hit the 6 or 7 win mark som3things got to give defensively. We are no where close to where we need to be in my opinion. Ole Miss will thrash us if something doesn’t change.

I think we can beat Ole Miss, but it’s gonna take a Herculean effort and game plan.

Neither the O nor the D ever looked really comfortable. Some good spurts here and there but a lot of big plays on individual effort and better athleticism.

Play calling still looks discombobulated from series to series. I hope Buster has been holding back for Ole Miss. Given time, King throws a good ball but thought we would see more running from QB. Pass plays seem to be short to the outside (not very effective) or post/corner - not working the middle. Also a lot of RB shuffling - gimme more Cooley.

Haven't figured the defense's plan. Weak on the edges on runs. Can't generate pressure with front 4 alone. Seem to be relying on reputation of backfield but too many plays with DBs not turning their heads and/or looking at each other afterwards with that "I thought you had him" vibe. Tackling is a problem but looks to be more a situation where we are beat and trying to catch up - not breaking down up front blocking.

Lane warmed up fine for the second half. No trainers. Nothing. What exactly worries you?
