Tampa inspired me to start this thread so that everyone can ring in on their opinion of Chan Gailey. Here is the game. List at least 1 positive and 1 negative of the Chan Gailey era. Be fair about it. Don't list crap, list real positives and real negatives.

I'll start and I'll only list one of each and will enjoy reading everyone elses responses.

Chan's biggest positive:
He's maintained a winning record and our bowl record despite some setbacks such as flunkgate and NCAA probation that I do not hold him accountable for.

Chan's biggest negative:
0-5 versus UGA

Positive: One surprise win a year. *

Negative: Our bowl streak. Backing into some crappy bowls is nothing to be proud of. **

* Although that surprise win has never been UGAG.

** It was either this or the fact that Chan has led us to some of the most embarassing losses I've ever witnessed (Duke/51-7 x 2/Clemson, etc, etc).

Mine's exactly the same as yours.

Unless we can credit Chan for Dave Braine's retirement somehow, then that becomes the biggest positive.

Biggest positive - has eliminated the wild swings in our record from year to year. Basically, the same as your positive. Stability.

Biggest negative, actually is the same thing as the biggest positive. I think Chan's style - what it is about the way he does things that keeps us from losing too often is exactly what keeps us from winning it all.

The analogy that I use to explain this is the Braves during the 90s. They won on the backs of their staff ERA. They won using the law of averages which, over 160 games is not a bad way to do it.

But, when you have to win 4 of the next 7, the law of averages isn't your buddy anymore. If you don't have that "burst" gear like so many of the teams that kept the Braves from winning more than one WS over their stretch of division titles then that's where you get off.

Same with Chan, I think. Plays for average. Doesn't lose too many but won't win too many either.

A lot of conservative coaches occasionally "spring one" and show a little river-boat gambler. I guess the best way I can put it is that Chan is too afraid of making mistakes to take the risks necessary sometimes to get over the top.

Positives:
Is generally very honest with folks close to the program
High character coach, high character kids
He generally does whats right for the persons life...not just about football
Does 'get' what tech is about
Is loyal to his players and coaches (also a negative)
Is a players coach
Never below .500 in the ACC
Always makes a bowl
Has had some nice wins

Negatives:
Is bad with the media and as a promoter of GT
couldn't motivate himself out of a paper bag
is an avg X's and O's coach...no innovation
Takes too long to make a program decision (firings, putting the right responsibilities with good coaches like recruiting)
Is loyal to a fault; sometimes so loyal it sacrifices other 21 players for the sake of 1
takes no risks, in fact, b/c of playing it safe so much he can cost GT games
Team never is good at offense...despite being an offensive coach
Has had some bad losses
Never can beat the 5 loss mark
Last but not least 0-5

Positive: Gailey's resurection of recruiting
Negative: Gailey's handling of the OC position

Positives: Tenuta (when he makes proper adjustments)

Negatives: Building an offense to suit an inadequate quarterback (reggie ball), instead of building it around an all-world wide receiver.*

* When you've got a Calvin Johnson, you take advantage of it. In a couple games he was the most talented decoy to ever be used, and it didn't help.

Positive: Beating Auburn the year before they went undefeated with a true freshman QB and after losing 10 players to flunkgate including his best returning offensive and defensive players.

Negative: Pissing away the ACCCG last year by not giving TB a chance in the 4th quarter. Unforgivable!

POSITIVES:
*As a person --a fine representative of GT.
*Upswing in recruiting.
*Stability --all +.500 seasons --no 3-9, 4-8 seasons to speak of.
*Big wins over the likes of Auburn, Miami, VT, Clemson --two well-prepared bowl teams against Tulsa and Syracuse.

NEGATIVES:
*As a coach --somewhat stubborn and conservative in his offensive philosophy.
*Inconsistency --big wins overshadowed somewhat by bad losses --WF, Duke, UNC, NCSt.
*Blowout losses --'02 UGA, '03 Clemson, '04 Miami, '05 VT, Utah, '06 Clemson.
*Blown opportunities in '06 to defeat UGA and win an ACC title.
*Sticking with his struggling starting QB at the end of last season.
*Winless against UGA.

ONE at a time

A Positive: A great person; Richt reminds me of Gailey!

A Negative: BLIND loyalty to coaches and "experienced" players. Fire the failures, Chan! Play the Talent, Chan!

Positive: Doesn't tell the media why he made certain decisions. (i.e. doesn't throw players and coachesunder the bus, etc.)

Negative: Doesn't tell the media why he made certain decisions. (i.e. gets hammered for not throwing players under the bus, etc. when there were often very good reasons for his decisions.)

Positives: Recruiting is bringing in more talent, while the character of the students remains high. The defense is solid year to year. Special teams seem to be improving along with our depth. Coaching for running backs (and necessarily the OL) has been outstanding.

Negatives. Poor QB development. Poor WR development. Poor management of team focus. We have come out flat too many times once ranked. We have only preformed well in the spotlight when we have been an underdog.

My biggest concern is that Chan is only good at building the foundation of a good team. But a program is more than just a solid base. It takes a different skill set inspire a good team to become great, rather than to take an average team and make them good.

Positives: Honest, Good Character, Genuine concern about the well being of his players

Negatives: Unwilling to adapt to change, Reactive rather than proactive, indecisive / slow to take action, communication skills, lack of charisma, makes poor decisions in time critical situations,

BOR & 33jacket pretty well summed up my thoughts.

Great man of character and must know football or would not be where he has been.

Losses to that place over yonder is my biggest negative.

Negative: Doesn't tell the media why he made certain decisions. (i.e. gets hammered for not throwing players under the bus, etc. when there were often very good reasons for his decisions.)

Do you know of any of these reasons for certain or are you just trusting that there must be good reasons?

Positive: never having a losing season.
Neg: Never beat Ugay or won the ACC championship as he said were his goals.

positive: hiring Kelly and Smith
negative: hiring Wilson and Nix and trying to stick with them.

Wow, the a thread inspired my little old me? Thanks!

Positive: Representing our school and leading the team with character and integrity.

Negative: Not reaching CCG's stated goals (ACC Champs & beating Georgie) fast enough.
