Y'all have covered this pretty well, but there was another factor in play.
Even back 50 years ago the NCAA restricted the number of complimentary tickets that could be provided with a max of four (4) for any player. Typically seniors and starters got four & everyone else got two. Eddie was a SR & a starter, but was limited to four free tickets.
We had a bunch of guys from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, NJ, etc., that always would either surrepticiously "sell" their allotted tickets or just give them to the southern guys. Eddie & his advisors did not pursue this route, so Fulcher really didn't have much of a choice after Eddie skipped practice, the team bus, etc., on Friday.
I was a Freshmen Team Student-Assistant Coach that year & no one outside of Fulcher & maybe his secretary knew what was going on. Maybe Friday about 5PM the story broke. I don't think Eddie's position coach, the extremely popular Steve Sloan, knew what was going down. And I may be mistaken, but I think the GTAA even kept a Georgia Highway Patrol Car with Col Hugh Hardison & Coach Jim Luck around just in case Eddie showed.
If you want to read a slanted, one-sided,
WRONG op-ed piece by a very biased writer, Dr. Richard Lapchick, written about 15 years ago for ESPN, here's the
link. I called Lapchick out on it then, pointed out the obvious flaws in his article, & his response was to send me a copy of his latest book.
That said, saw Eddie, AKA "Skip," in the Letterwinners Lounge Saturday night. He was "my old teammate," not someone who bailed before the UGag game.
Now.... extra credit if you know how to pronounce Eddie's surname:
(A) MACK-A-Shann
(B) Mac-ASH-Ann
(C) MUH-Shann
(D) Muh-CASH-Ann
(E) Other
