are you just going to rip this guy for the next 5 years?

Why is Tenuta getting a free pass on that bowl game? That team put up a 21 spot on a top 10 defense in the first quarter.

Are you saying that CG screwed up the D? If you are saying that then does that mean CG was the reason the D held Miami in tow?

Just a few questions for the GaileyHaters.

1) I'll call a spade a spade is what I'll do. He's done some good, he's done some bad, right now the bad outweighs the good in my (and a LOT of other peoples) opinion, thats why we complain.

2 & 3) He's not, the HC is responsible for the team, therefore he gets the bitching. The defense let the team down, yes, but offense sputtered and piddled around 3 and outs and put up a rediculously low amount of points. People tend to get a free pass everynow and then when they've been genius before though. If the defense gets 30+ put on them for 5 or so games next year then JT is on the crap list too, thats the way things work. Bottom line, criticism starts and ends with the HC, I fail to see how anyone could see things any differently.

... I dont know why I take the bait, oh well, back to the grindstone.

I'll answer it and I'm a FOCer, defender of Chan, whatever.

If I ever get to the point where I'm a hater - I will not rip him on the boards. I may criticize but I won't flat out attack like some do.

I agree with the other poster - the head coach and the QB always get the most criticism (and the most praise). I'm sure CCG is OK with that. I don't see him as one that deflects the criticism to his assistants - he does take responsibility.

The defense will have down games every once in a while. The problem is we don't have an offense that can cover for the defense when it's not performing the way to it's capability. The defense can't be expected to win every game without help from the O and special teams.

I think that people are able to look past the occasional bad game that Tenuta's defense has because everyone knows that he is one of the best DCs out there and the results from the past 4 years bear that out.

Year / Rank / Point Allowed Per Game
2000 / 20th / 19.00 Pre - Tenuta
2001 / 37th / 22.25 Pre - Tenuta
2002 / 27th / 20.54
2003 / 27th / 20.46
2004 / 21st / 18.92
2005 / 23rd / 20.08

Gailey's offense on the other hand not only has bad games, but bad seasons year after year and the results bear it out. What makes it even more frustrating is that it seems Gailey is unwilling change even though it is not working.

Year / Rank / Points Per Game
2000 / 18th / 33.82 Pre - Gailey
2001 / 28th / 31.75 Pre - Gailey
2002 / 94th / 21.54
2003 / 90th / 21.08
2004 / 85th / 22.00
2005 / 103rd / 18.50

hey lawb

Ok the D played bad and gave up 38 pts, but the last time I checked the final score the guru's O only put 10 pts on the board.

Over the last 5 games the O has averaged 11 pts. Dosen't matter if GT has the #1 ranked D, GT will not win many games(during that stretch GT went 1-4)

Here are some questions for you:

1. What is the O ranked this year?

2. What was the O ranked the last 3 years?

3. Who calls the plays and prepares the Gameplane?

4. Honestly how man games would this GT team win if JT was not the DC?

The above numbers provided by JTS are a good indication as to why GT has had four consecutive average seasons under the CG regime. His tenure has not been bad, GT has averaged 7 wins a season under CG (easy math with 4 consecutive seven-win seasons). Under GO'L GT averaged 8.8 wins in his last 4 seasons, 7.6 in his 7 years at The Flats.

The problem I have with the current circumstances is IMO I just do not see GT reaching the next level under CG and one big reason why is the anemic offensive output.

Scoring breakdown in the CG era:
00-10 pts. 10 times
11-20 pts. 16
21-30 pts. 18
31-40 pts. 2
40- + pts. 4

50 games, 52% of the time scoring 20 or fewer points.

How and when will the offensive numbers turn around, thus enabling GT to possibly reach that next level (an 8-9 win season and a respectable bowl invite).

This is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dead_horse.gif, but how can a guy with the talent of a CJ catch 4 passes in the last 2 games (where one of the games was against a mid-level WAC Utah team which gave up 28 or more points in over half of it's regular season games in 2005). This defense can hold CJ to two friggin' catches?

With these statements and statistics I refuse to be categorized by certain posters as a 'hater'. I am not a hater. I am a fan of GT who wants to achieve the next level. I hope it happens against Notre Dame next year. I hope that CG leads GT to 8-9 wins next year. But in order for that to take place, something needs to happen on the offensive side of the ball. The man who calls the plays and pencils in RB at the starting QB position must find a way to break a four year pattern that has produced offensive ineptness to this point.

let's reverse the question...when do you begin laying any blame at the feet of our million dollar a year coach? Pitiful bowls, mediocre consistent seasons, inconsistent play, lack of recruiting at key positions, NCAA probation, Flunkgate, etc.. just a bad string of bad luck for the guy? Some of that stuff may have been out of his hands but he's the head coach and should be held accountable, should know what is going on with the AA, and should do better with consistent play calling. For one small example, the best receiver the Flats will probably ever see...four touches the past two games. Oh yea, that's not his fault either...all at Ball's feet and those games had zero to do with playcalling. Even the FOCs here have questioned his 5 year contract and say that he probably got it bc Braine knew the probation was looming and we needed to keep him around. Let's not forget the GT fan base either which is more divided than it has ever been and the effect that continued articles we're probably sure to see like the one in Sports Illustrated about him being the worst coach in the country will have on our program. Oh yea, some here have blame for that too saying the writer has a grudge. I'm surprised to see that no one has written a response calling him a "dawg" which is typical here to anyone who isn't a pollyanna to the status quo.

But then again, he wins one or two signature games a year which is just enough to keep many happy apparently.

Yes I agree with most. That is, Tenuta doesn't always have a bad game but our offense does.

Also something to consider about our defense and the Utah game. Our defense is recruited toward the schedule we know about. That is, we recruit players and build a defense toward defending the ACC and UGA games. The west coast offenses are much different adn require different forms.

Additionally, with the wet field, Utah had a lot of built in advantages that we couldn't seem to overcome. One is that we tend to play zone defenses, blitz often, and recover quickly. It's what we do, but with the wet field, we were completely taken out of our game.

Secondly, the wet field gives a definite advantage to the stronger lines. Utah had a strong advantage there.

BUT, having said that, if we want to play top notch football, then we have to be able to adjust. This is one of Chan's weaknesses and certainly Tenuta did little better in San Fran.

I've heard it all now. Again, not Gailey's fault bc the field was wet and gave the Utes an advantage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Sorry Mid, my pre-k board skills are not up to using your quote while addressing someone else.

Whaddya want GeeTee? How is this statement not about blame on Gailey?
Maybe it's just not as harsh as you want.

By the way, the field should not have hurt us anymore than uta, but I think it did.

My question for you is this. It seems like for the longest time the FOC'ers used the excuse of Dave Braine's relationship with Frank Beamer as an excuse to keep Chan around. After all, since it took Beamer that many years to develop the football team, then Chan should also get the same amount of time from Braine. Well, do you still defend this in the wake of Vick's expulsion? Do you still defend this after you've seen the type of player that Beamer recruits and the attitude that his team has? Is this also the same sequence of events that you want for GT?

Just a question for the Gailey lovers. What school did you go to again?

I'm not a Gailey hater, and I respect the man, but I'll answer this anyway. I just don't think he will ever build a strong competitive program at Ga Tech. And I would not defend Tenuta, either, though he seems to have done more good than bad. However, I think GT needs a new head coach, and that man needs to bring in a new staff. Period.

JTS, thanks for an excellent statistical analysis. As one who supports Chan and the contract extension but who does not think every thing is OK, these stats should be the driving motivation for Gailey and staff over the next five years.

It is clear we play defense well enough under Gailey/Tenuta to be a top 25 team. But, we are fortunate we are winning 6 to 7 games each year with an offense that has been these past four years a bottom 25.

Now Gailey has the chance to address this. Do we need an OC? Does he need to be less hands on in play calling? Did he simply blow it with his QB choice? Do we need to think about a whole new system? Has recruiting favored defense over offense?

If he addresses this problem and our offense becomes more productive, he will be successful and we will be glad we stayed the course. If he continues to ignore the problem with offense, and I would add special teams, we will either stay plateaued or decline. If that happens he will be let go after two more seasons, three at the most, with his contract bought out.

I am willing to wait and see and hope that Coach Gailey understands his long term future at the Flats depends on his ability to get offense and special teams on a par with the defense.

I agree. Here's hoping that he gets it done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drink1.gif

77 ,I hear this all the time but this is college football and not the NFL
We dont have to settle for 1 first round draft choice. We can recruit 22 first rounders so why does people say we recruit for the defense?

We have brought in more offensive than defensive recruits since Gailey has arrived (about 5-7 more O players).

CAN THE CHAN!!! NUFF SAID! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/behead.gif

lawbee, for credibility purposes

you really should respond to JTS's post. Dang those pesky FACTS.
